Should You Watch It?
Here's the decision in full. This is that rare Amazon comedy that simply tries to entertain you — and succeeds. It's slick, consistently funny, and it carries something you don't often find in the genre: a surprisingly positive, morally uplifting message about marriage between one man and one woman. Darcy and Tom work through their differences with real respect and heart, functioning as a husband and wife should even before the ceremony arrives.
But it earns its R. There are many strong and light obscenities and profanities, lots of intense action violence where many villains bite the dust, and lewd, bawdy dialogue — plus other couples at the wedding who are unfaithful or itching to sleep around. The good example belongs to the leads, not to everyone on screen.
So: if you're an adult who can enjoy a raucous action-comedy without harm to your conscience, this one is worth your time — and because it's streaming, we'd watch it at home, where you control the room. If you're choosing for children or young teens, choose something else.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESDarcy and Tom are throwing a fairytale destination wedding in the Philippines. Before the vows, they're already contending with family drama and each other's insecurities — is this really going to work?
Then a band of pirates crashes the party, taking the wedding guests hostage to extort ransom money from Darcy's father. Suddenly the soon-to-be-newlyweds have to spring into action, as awkwardly and unexpectedly as any amateur anti-piracy force would. Can two ordinary people come together for more than the ceremony — and save their guests, and themselves?
Is It Any Good?
Four stars, and here's what they mean. This romantic action-comedy has high production values and knows exactly what it wants to be. The Filipino vistas are gorgeous, and their beauty contrasts sharply with the pirate invasion that becomes the real conflict. The action sequences are well executed, played for hilarity, and — refreshingly — free of excessive blood or gore.
Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel are convincing and engaging as an unlikely hero-and-heroine couple, and a lively supporting cast helps, with Cheech Marin as Darcy's father and Lenny Kravitz as her former fiancé. The movie is consistently funny, sometimes laugh-out-loud, but its real power is in the subtler chuckles it earns from anyone who has been married to the right person. Best of all, Amazon Studios pulls off an effective comedy without its usual habit of pushing an agenda in your face. Enjoyable, relatable, and a diamond in the rough for the genre.
The Worldview
Underneath the caper runs a very strong moral worldview, and it's the reason this movie is worth talking about at all. Against a culture soaked in postmodern pessimism about marriage, Shotgun Wedding dares to celebrate the real thing: a covenant between one man and one woman.
Watch what the leads do. Darcy comes to see Tom's obsession with a big wedding as his way of telling her she is his treasure. Tom comes to see that his insecurity over her former fiancé was foolish. They work out their misunderstandings honestly and respectfully — and, thrown into an extraordinary situation, they function as a husband and wife should: overcoming obstacles together, resolving issues, understanding and helping each other. That is a picture the Bible knows well, the union of a man and wife echoing Christ and the Church. Even Tom's romantic notion that Darcy is all he needs doesn't erase that biblical foundation.
The film isn't clean, though, and it doesn't pretend to be. Its romance carries romantic and pagan streaks, and while the leads model faithfulness, other couples at the wedding are unfaithful, and various guests talk openly about sleeping around. The good example is real, but it isn't universal.
The longing this movie names is the longing to be someone's treasure — to be chosen and kept. Scripture answers it at the root: "So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate" (Matthew 19:6).
