Should You Watch It?
The Chambermaid has an intriguing idea: fantasy can be harmless at first but become dangerous when obsession makes reality difficult to recognize. A married French foundry worker tells an invented story about a beautiful chambermaid, and the story gradually takes over his imagination.
The film spends too much time on that fantasy, however, and on an audience eager to hear stories about adulterous sex. Its plot development can be confusing, while the story and dialogue lack enough substance to support the subject matter. The sensual scenes avoid nudity, which is a genuine restraint, but the movie never brings a strong enough moral viewpoint to the situation.
If you are a mature adult who wants to examine those ideas carefully, wait to watch it at home. For family viewing, choose something else.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESHorty, a married French foundry worker, briefly meets a beautiful chambermaid preparing to board the doomed Titanic. Nothing sexual happens between them, but people in his hometown urge him to invent a story about an affair.
When Horty tells the story, convincing his wife that it was fiction becomes difficult. As his storytelling continues, the boundary between reality and fantasy begins to blur.
Is It Any Good?
Two stars means the film has an interesting premise but does not develop it successfully. The fantasy-versus-reality theme offers some intriguing twists, and the sensual scenes are restrained by the absence of nudity.
Still, the plot is confusing at times. The movie spends excessive time on Horty’s fantasy and imagination, as well as on the audience’s desire for erotic stories. The plot and dialogue do not provide significant substance to make up for the immoral situation at the center.
The Worldview
The Chambermaid argues that fantasizing is part of human nature, but that obsession with fantasy can cause people to lose touch with reality and begin living in an unrealistic fantasy world. That warning is worthwhile. The film recognizes a real danger in allowing imagination to govern life.
But the story does not develop its theme fully, and it does not offer a strong moral viewpoint about the adulterous situation it depicts. Its focus on erotic storytelling and the desire to be entertained by such stories leaves the film more interested in fantasy than in the responsibilities of marriage, truth, and self-control.
A biblical view also takes the inner life seriously. Scripture says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Fantasy becomes dangerous when it displaces truth and faithful living.
