Should You Watch It?

The source review gives this romantic drama four stars, praising its craftsmanship and the competent acting of Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and especially Ross Malinger as eight-year-old Jonah. Its central theme—that love endures and never fails—is presented as a refreshing one.

The film does include a couple of obscenities and at least two scenes of suggestive sexual dialogue involving Jonah. Those concerns call for discernment, especially for families with younger children, but the source review does not treat them as overwhelming.

If you enjoy polished romantic drama and can discuss those moments thoughtfully, WORTH THE TRIP.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

On Christmas Eve, eight-year-old Jonah calls a national radio talk show to discuss his recently widowed father, Sam. In Baltimore, Annie hears the broadcast and begins daydreaming about Sam, even though she is engaged to Walter.

Annie’s fascination leads her toward Seattle and a possible meeting with Sam. Jonah’s heartfelt involvement draws the adults into a romantic journey shaped by radio, distance, and the movies they love.

Is It Any Good?

The source review awards the film four stars, while describing it as well crafted, though not outstanding. Nora Ephron’s film pays homage to An Affair to Remember, and the story knowingly reflects the idea that it is “a movie about love in the movies.”

The acting is competent across the central cast. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan carry the romance, while Ross Malinger makes a particular impression as Jonah. The result is a polished romantic drama with a strong emotional premise, even if the source stops short of calling it exceptional.

The Worldview

The film presents romantic love as powerful, enduring, and capable of bringing people together across great distance. Its premise treats love and the longing for connection with warmth, and the review specifically admires its theme as a refreshing reminder that “Love never fails.”

The film also includes a positive portrayal of the father-son relationship between Sam and Jonah. At the same time, Sam does not believe in God, an element Christian viewers should recognize without assuming the film shares a specifically Christian understanding of faith.

The movie’s emphasis on enduring love connects with Scripture’s affirmation: “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8).
