Should You Watch It?

Yes, but this one is for the grown ups! The movie offers an entertaining, behind-the-scenes look at the unlikely story of how ROCKY came to life. The immersive performances help tell this chapter of Hollywood history ,drawing viewers into the struggles, setbacks and determination behind the movie's creation. The cast does a wonderful job capturing the personalities and passion that helped turn an ambitious idea into a cultural phenomenon.

At its heart, this is an inspiring reminder that difficult circumstances don't have to determine where life takes you. Sylvester Stallone's determination, perseverance and belief in his own potential make him an admirable figure. Despite rejection and seemingly impossible odds, he refuses to give up on the opportunity to bring his vision to life.

His journey illustrates the value of hard work, personal conviction and the courage to take a chance when the opportunity finally comes. Sometimes, getting where you want to go means refusing to let a few closed doors convince you that the journey is over. Parents should know that the movie includes some strong language, brief violence, and mature subject matter. Kids and teens need to sit this one out.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

This biographical drama follows Sylvester Stallone's struggle to become a successful actor and his determination to write and star in his own film. When he creates a script about an underdog boxer, he faces an uphill battle to get the project made. Even after receiving lucrative offers to give up the lead role, Stallone stands by his vision and fights to bring ROCKY to the big screen.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars for a likable movie that shines brightest through its performances and well-timed humor. Each character brings something special to the mix, thanks to a cast that gives everyone room to shine. Anthony Ippolito, AnnaSophia Robb are particularly memorable, sharing wonderful chemistry that feels equally genuine during their happiest moments and more emotional scenes.

Humor is another highlight, especially when everyday situations spiral into unexpected disasters. The characters' amusing reactions, quick remarks and sometimes questionable decisions keep the comedy fresh.

The strong cast and excellent script give this movie its winning edge. However, the behind-the-scenes look at an adult film set introduces questionable material and undercuts an otherwise entertaining movie.

The Worldview

I PLAY ROCKY carries a moral worldview with light Romantic elements. Its main message urges viewers to follow their dreams, but the story deepens that idea through Stallone and Sasha’s marriage. When producers offer Stallone a fortune to give up the lead role, he wrestles with the choice. The money lets him settle down and give his wife a comfortable life, but if he takes it, he abandons his dream.

Here the movie shows its Romantic elements: it trusts Stallone’s heart over common sense and paints the safe path as a sellout. Yet, Sasha refuses to decide for him. She tells Stallone the choice belongs to him alone because if he chooses for her sake, he may come to resent her. Her counsel reflects the selfless love of 1 Corinthians 13:5, a love that does not seek its own way.

Another major theme centers on the value of wholehearted effort. Stallone wants to write scripts with roles for himself, but none impress producers enough to buy. Then he watches Muhammad Ali fight an underdog and feels the sport’s true thrill. Inspired, he decides to base his next script on a boxer. That story becomes the breakthrough he needs.

The Content Guide

The specifics — spoilers included by nature — so you can judge for your own family.

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements

Very strong moral, biblical worldview, as a husband and wife support each other’s dreams and a father and son reconnect after a broken relationship, with some Christian imagery, as the main character lives near a building with a neon “Jesus Saves” cross that sits across from a theater marquee for X-rated movies, and a scene recreated from the original ROCKY shows boxers fight beneath a large gym mural of Jesus with communion, plus light Romantic elements, as the movie trusts the hero’s heart over common sense and paints the safe path as a sellout

Foul Language

30 “sh” words, two “f” words, a few “f” word substitutes, one “Jesus” profanity, and a handful of other crude terms, such as “a” and “b” words, “crap,” “damn,” “hell,” slang for male and female anatomy

Violence

Moderate violence, as the movie shows several gym workouts and a few real fights in the ring. Several scenes show blood

Sex

Implied sexual immorality, as a man and woman prepare for a nude scene in an adult film, though the actors never actually have sex. Frank talk about the adult entertainment industry. A couple kiss and hug

Nudity

Upper male nudity with boxers only wearing shorts, brief flash of male hip and bottom when man strips down for audition, and a small poster for a nude scene audition shows brief nudity

Alcohol Use

Some alcohol use, as characters drink in a bar but not to excess

Smoking and/or Drug Use and Abuse

Some smoking, as characters smoke cigarettes

Miscellaneous Immorality

Husbands who lie to their wives, actors who lie about their talents. A  fathers admits he beat their kids, people who gamble on a prizefight, and rich producers who try to crush an actor’s dream for their own gain.

Talk About It

Questions for the drive home, the dinner table, or the youth group.

01

When producers offer Stallone a hefty sum for his script, he keeps the news from his wife. Later she discovers the truth, and the secret wounds her. How deeply can dishonesty hurt the people we love? Proverbs 12:22

02

The producers try to rattle Stallone with a threat: if anything goes wrong while he plays Rocky, they will fire him on the spot, and all his hard work will amount to nothing. What does Stallone’s choice to press on despite the dread reveal about his character? 2 Chronicles 15:7

03

On set, Stallone offers a part to his father, a man who once loved the stage too. Why does this gesture toward his dad matter so much to Stallone? Exodus 20:12

The Final Word

Every underdog story needs a fighter worth the cheer, and I PLAY ROCKY delivers one. Stallone bets it all on a dream, leans on a wife who loves him enough to let him choose, and pours his whole heart into the role that changes his life. The movie celebrates marriage, family, and grit. However, mature content means this one is for adults only.

THE VERDICT WORTH THE TRIP - Adults only.
