Should You Watch It?

Absolutely! This biographical drama follows Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart’s Air Force service during WWII. It shows how his wartime experiences shape his return home and his performance in the now-iconic IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

Excellent craftsmanship and a strong cast set this movie apart, with KJ Apa leading the way. Apa and Max Casella, who plays Frank Capra, share great chemistry, while director Aaron Burns brings tension and realism to the aerial combat scenes. The script delivers moving moments that highlight Stewart’s faith, patriotism, and relationships.

Ultimately, the story offers an inspiring message of hope and kindness that honors the legacy of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE. A strong Christian and moral worldview anchors the story. Stewart’s desire to be “a good man” motivates him to serve in WWII, where his bravery and support for his troops earn their respect. His faith shines through his prayers, his father’s gift of a book of Psalms, and his belief that their lives are “in God’s hands.”

Patriotism, family, and friendship also play important roles, particularly in Stewart’s relationship with Capra. Intense battle scenes depict Stewart on Air Force missions, along with dead bodies, some blood, and a character’s death onscreen. Younger children may find these scenes too intense, so parents should consider their child’s sensitivity to wartime violence before watching.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Jimmy Stewart is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, with an Oscar to prove it. When he receives a draft notice, Stewart prepares to serve his country, but must first fight the studios and the military to gain permission to fight on the front lines.

His determination takes him to England, where he serves in the Air Force, flies dangerous missions, and struggles to deal with the realities of war. When the war ends and Stewart returns home, he's unsure whether he will return to his former Hollywood life, but a script from friend Frank Capra about a man who loses all hope might convince him to make one more movie.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars! JIMMY brings Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart’s real-life story to the screen with remarkable heart. KJ Apa delivers an outstanding performance as Stewart, capturing his distinctive voice and mannerisms so naturally that his portrayal feels authentic, not like an imitation. His onscreen chemistry with Max Casella (Frank Capra) is a joy to watch, and it crescendos in a scene that will bring a tear to many viewers’ eyes.

The movie is well-made, from top to bottom, with great sets, a talented cast, and scenes that depict the realities of war while still sharing a message of hope. The scenes in the cockpit of Stewart and his crew’s plane stand out. Director Aaron Burns captures the claustrophobia and tension of these moments in a way that brings them to life.

While the script focuses on Stewart’s struggles to face the loss of life he saw during WWII, as well as his hard reintegration into everyday life, it promotes a message of hope and kindness that echoes the legacy of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

The Worldview

A strong Christian, moral worldview drives this story, with plenty of patriotic elements alongside it. At its heart, the movie follows James Stewart’s desire to live as “a good man.” That desire pushes him to serve as a real soldier in World War II rather than sit out the war in Hollywood. Stewart leads his men well and earns their respect through courage and kindness. His relationship with Lady Julia also points toward kindness, both to others and to yourself.

Faith runs through the whole story. Stewart’s father gives him a copy of the Psalms before he leaves. Later, Stewart prays in a church for the airmen he lost. He also tells his men their lives rest “in God’s hands.” In one great moment, studio head Louis B. Mayer calls Stewart, as a movie star, “a god.” Stewart pushes back and flatly denies it.

Patriotism also takes center stage. Stewart wants to serve his country in a way that truly matters. He turns down a chance to defer his draft, and he refuses a promotional role far from combat. He wants a spot on the front lines. In one powerful scene, he rallies his fellow airmen before a dangerous mission and reminds them, “Our country needs us.”

Hollywood offers Stewart fame and comfort, yet he chooses sacrifice and service. Families will find a true hero to admire. In the end, Stewart’s story shows that a good man finds his strength not in fame but in faith, and that true courage flows from humility before God.

02

Even with a chance to defer his draft or take a safe position, Stewart chooses to serve his country. Why do you think Scripture calls us to serve others? Can you recall a time you served others, even when it felt hard or scary? Philippians 2:3-4

03

Throughout the movie, characters talk about the importance of hope, even in the face of darkness. As Christians, how does the Holy Spirit actively help us “abound in hope,” and what does that look like in daily life? Romans 15:13

The Final Word

JIMMY is a well-crafted biopic that follows Jimmy Stewart from Hollywood star to World War II bomber pilot and celebrates faith, friendship, and patriotism. Intense air battles and a few bloody images may upset young children, so little ones should skip this one. Older kids and teens, however, will find plenty to discuss. Stewart had every excuse to stay home, yet he chose to serve. After the credits roll, ask them: What comfort would you give up to do the right thing?

THE VERDICT WORTH THE TRIP - Caution for young viewers.
