Grammy Award-nominated artist Tauren Wells shared how one moment with his son taught him a life lesson about God.

“I just told one of my sons to go do something, and he was still standing there,” Wells explained in a video shared on Instagram. “I had gone to do something else, and I went back, and I said, ‘Did you not hear what I asked you to do?’ And he said, ‘Yes, but I asked you a question, and you didn’t answer me.’ And I said, ‘I gave you my answer when I gave you my instruction.’”

“How many of us are asking God questions when He’s already told us what to do? Maybe He’s just waiting for us to do it?” the singer asked.

Wells reflected on how much we need God’s voice to lead us daily during an appearance on the “Jesus Calling” podcast.

“We know that the joy of the Lord’s supposed to be our strength, but you can only be serious about God and being in God’s presence. If in His presence there is fullness of joy, why can’t we do things that demonstrate joyfulness like smiling, laughing, dancing and celebrating? And so that’s a part of what I do,” he explained.

“I want people to be able to engage with the voice of God every day. We need His voice. We need His voice; we need to be able to hear Him when He speaks, when He corrects, when He encourages, when He leads; we have to be able to listen,” he continued.

In 2024, Wells and his family listened to God’s call and launched a church in Austin, Texas.

“Today, we officially launched Church of Whitestone with 3,500 friends! We’re embarking on an incredible journey to help people discover their God-authored identity through whole-hearted relationship with Jesus, and today was just the beginning,” the church shared on Instagram.

The year before, Wells and his wife, Lorna, shared why they decided to be church planters.

“Through the planting of a vibrant, life-giving community of faith, Church of Whitestone, we are assuming our calling as Lead Pastors of the church that God placed in our heart more than 10 years ago. The vision is clear, ‘helping people discover their God-authored identity through wholehearted relationship with Jesus,’ and the time is now,” the couple explained in a post on Instagram.

“I was practicing piano,” Wells said of how their dream began. “And a professor came into my school and said, ‘Tauren, are you called to preach?’ I said, ‘Yes, Sir, I think I am.’ He said, ‘Don’t get too wrapped up in the music.’ I now understand that the full assignment has not been songwriting and performing; the rest of the essay is still yet to be written.”

From a simple lesson with his son to planting a church rooted in identity and joy, Wells’ story points to one central truth: obedience to God’s voice is often the only answer we’re waiting for.
