Country star Thomas Rhett believes family time should always be high in quality, even if there isn’t a lot of quantity.
“If your wife feels loved and known, if your kids feel loved and known, all of a sudden when you go out the door to go to work, your family’s going, ‘Go get em, dad!’ compared to ‘Oh, he’s going to go do that thing that’s going to take away from us,” Rhett explained on the “Jefferson Fisher Podcast.”
With whatever time parents have, whether it’s a lot or a little, that time with their family should be “intentional.”
“That’s so much more than you just kind of being there,” he said.
Rhett and his wife, Lauren Akins, have five children. The oldest is 10, and the youngest was born this year.
“I think kids have such a funny way of, like, really, really humbling you. …They are the most incredible gift on the planet. But if you want to be humbled really fast, have a lot of kids,” he joked in another podcast interview.

The things that you might think are part of who you are don’t matter to children.
“And so, when you walk in the door and you’re immediately met by, ‘Hey Dad, make me a sandwich.’ You know what I mean? And you’re sitting there going, ‘You know how many people I just played to this weekend?’ They’re like, ‘Don’t care. Make me a sandwich,’” the singer said.
They help Rehtt understand who he is to them — not a famous singer, but their father.
“I think that those priority lists have sort of done like a flip-flop, like in 10 years. Being a father and a husband first…I don’t know that 25-year-old TR would’ve fully understood that,” he said about himself.
He always wants his children to know that they are always more important than whatever he’s doing.
“I want to make sure that as my kids get older they know that they were always chosen first over career, over whatever,” Rhett said. “That’s just kind of dad that I want to be known for by them, for sure.”
He moves things like social media to the backburner when he’s around his children.
“My kids will always take precedent over that stuff,” he emphasized.
As a busy singer, it can’t be easy to balance a huge career and five children, but it seems like Rhett has a good handle on it.
