Atlanta Braves outfielder Brewer Hicklen wants to share the “good news, the bad news and the great news.”
“So, I guess what I’m trying to say right now is the good news: God loves you. God knows each and every one of you by name, and God wants a relationship with you,” Hicklen explained in a video on Instagram.
The bad news? “Some of us will hear that, but we still will choose to go our own way,” he said.
“But there’s better news — the great news, despite myself and you wanting to pursue the ways of the world, His love is so great that He sent his one and only Son to die on the cross, so that you can experience a freedom, a peace that transcends all understanding,” he emphasized, referencing John 3:16 and Philippians 4:7.

In another video, the outfielder shared that he wanted to be challenged in Scripture more. So, he reached out to his mentor, who pointed him to Ephesians 6, which talks about “putting on the full armor of God.”
“Sunday rolls around. We get to the field. We typically have a chaplain that does our Sunday service. Well, lo and behold, the chaplain does not show up, and so I had an opportunity to be obedient in what He put on my heart on Tuesday to be able to share about the body armor of God, and I got to share with them about the gospel,” Hicklen explained.
While speaking about the passage, he pointed out that Paul uses the word “stand” four times.
“It’s important for us to be able to stand, to reflect, to pause before we go into battle,” Hicklen said. “I think about in my own career. I’m not walking up to the plate frantically putting on my cleats, frantically putting on my gloves and my helmet. I’m standing in the dugout. I’m preparing for battle before the moment, and the same goes for our life.”
“We have to understand that we are in a spiritual warfare with our souls and that God is equipping us for that battle on a daily goal. We have to stand firm and to pause and to put on the armor of God before we go into our daily work,” he emphasized.
It certainly is good news to know that Christ can save us from our sins and equips us to fight the spiritual forces that come against us.
