SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY has swung into rarefied air, crossing $1.7 billion worldwide and landing among the 10 highest-grossing movies ever made.

In less than two weeks since its July 31 release, director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man sequel has done what only a handful of movies in history ever have, topping $1 billion in its first week and pushing past $1.7 billion by its twelfth day in theaters, according to Collider.

That haul edged past INSIDE OUT 2’s $1.69 billion run, bumping BRAND NEW DAY into the top 10 all-time worldwide and making it the fourth-highest-grossing movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, trailing only AVENGERS: ENDGAME ($2.79 billion), AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR ($2.04 billion) and SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME ($1.92 billion).

The opening weekend alone broke a record many assumed was untouchable. BRAND NEW DAY pulled in $360 million domestically, surpassing ENDGAME’s $357 million mark to become the biggest domestic debut in movie history, Movieguide® previously reported.

“This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world,” Feige said at the time.

Producer Amy Pascal struck a similar note.

“This remarkable opening reinforces that moviegoers are hungry for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human,” she said.

Critics and audiences have largely agreed on that last point. BRAND NEW DAY holds a 90% critics’ score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Movieguide® awarded the movie a full four out of four stars for entertainment quality.

“A terrific, heartfelt action adventure — exciting action scenes, real character development, compelling performances, and many touching moments,” the review reads.

The review found real spiritual weight underneath the web-slinging, too. Peter Parker risks his own life to save a stranger and pleads with a villain to abandon his evil path rather than destroy him, echoes of the very Gospel most Movieguide® readers know by heart.

That’s the kind of moral clarity Movieguide® has spent decades looking for in Hollywood’s biggest releases — and finding it wrapped inside the year’s biggest blockbuster is no small thing. But the review didn’t look away from the movie’s rougher edges, either.

Roughly 40 profanities work their way through the script, including one use of Jesus’s name as a curse and six instances of the GD profanity. That combination earned BRAND NEW DAY an “Extreme Caution” rating on Movieguide®’s scale, alongside its four-star recommendation — a reminder that a movie can carry real Christian symbolism and still hand parents a legitimate reason for pause.

Families weighing whether to catch BRAND NEW DAY in theaters, in other words, are looking at a movie that critics adore, audiences have shown up for in historic numbers and Movieguide® genuinely admires for its heart — provided they’re prepared for the language and comfortable saving it for older teens and adults.

Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman and Sadie Sink star in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and now playing in theaters worldwide.
