SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY just broke some more records.
The superhero movie is now the fastest to cross the half-billion mark at the domestic box office — and the second-fastest to make $1 billion.
Deadline reported that BRAND NEW DAY managed to “pull [making half a billion] off in a week’s time,” beating out 2019’s AVENGERS: ENDGAME, at eight days to do the same.
A few days later, the news broke that the superhero movie is now the second-fastest movie to bring in $1 billion internationally (12 days), only trailing AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

The movie is enjoying massive success around the world. BRAND NEW DAY is still sitting at No 1. in China, where it’s already brought in “a local total of $185.4 million (RMB 1.26 billion) in 12 days,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
“What happened is miraculous,” Sony CEO Tom Rothman told Variety. “SPIDER-MAN is uniting people across cultures and ages. People can [trash-talk] theatrical all they want, but that’s one thing that only movies — and movie theaters — can do.”
When asked what he thinks is driving this recent round of Spidey-mania, he replied, “Superhero movies have to feel fresh. The glut of all those movies has made it even more important that they separate themselves in terms of quality. If you’re just taking the obligatory steps, the audience is less excited. You have to work against predictability. How do you make movies not feel repetitive? BRAND NEW DAY is emotionally led, so it feels different.”
Producer Amy Pascal spoke to Deadline about BRAND NEW DAY, saying, “The key is for all of us who work on these movies together is to really focus on telling a story about Peter Parker, not telling and not telling a story about the end of the world or things that none of us can really relate to.”
“The wonderful thing about Peter is he’s just a kid with no money and no girlfriend and no game,” she joked. “That’s what makes him such a heroic character and such a mythic character for people, because all he is is a good guy.”
Pascal also brushed off any talk about “superhero fatigue,” referring to audiences’ flagging interest in comic book movies.
“I don’t think any of that is ever a real thing,” she said. “If you make a good movie that people can relate to, I think they relate to it and they want to see it. People go to movies emotionally. They go to movies about characters that they care about and SPIDER-MAN is at the top of the heap.”
SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY is now playing in theaters.
