Should You Watch It?

Yes, but with discernment. Families who love elaborate fairy tales will find plenty to enjoy here, with its magical creatures, ancient curses, and feuding families. The movie feels enchanting with gorgeous production design, elaborate costumes, atmospheric settings, and a haunting musical score.

This story has all the appeal of a classic fairy tale, with a mysterious manor, secret rooms, enchanted creatures, a curse, and a race against time. Maria serves as a determined, compassionate heroine who takes on the responsibility of breaking the curse and challenging the hatred between the two families.

It's message about pride, greed, forgiveness, and reconciliation gives the adventure more weight than a simple magical quest. A few scenes could scare younger audiences with a near-drowning and gunfire that results in the dog’s injury. Families who enjoy a little mystery and magic with their fairy tales will likely find this one worth watching.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Maria Merryweather’s life changes in an instant when her father dies, leaving her an orphan without the home and security she once knew. Her only inheritance is an unusual book about Moonacre Valley, where she must live with her sullen uncle, Sir Benjamin, in a remote manor in the countryside.

The manor holds mysteries: unexplained gifts, hidden rooms, strange happenings, and a mysterious white horse. Maria uncovers that her family connects to an ancient feud between two families and a curse that threatens the valley. The clock ticks as she realizes she has little time to lift the curse. Can Maria uncover the truth about her family’s past before it’s too late?

Is It Any Good?

Three stars for a visually stunning fairy tale with elaborate costumes, gorgeous scenery, and production design that gives its magical world a distinctive atmosphere. The haunting, lilting opening music establishes an ominous mood that complements the story, although the beginning moves slowly, with uneven character introductions and occasional stilted moments.

However, the movie gains momentum once Maria arrives at Moonacre Manor. As the story unfolds, the characters' relationships grow more layered, revealing a complicated history of love, betrayal, and resentment between two families. The familiar fairy-tale plot establishes its mythological backstory with ease, though some CGI elements, particularly the black lion, look noticeably artificial beside the more convincing practical sets and scenery.

Still, the emotional stakes are high, the characters are easy to connect with, and the movie's gorgeous visuals bring its enchanting world to life, making this a worthwhile fairy-tale adventure.

The Worldview

A strong moral worldview, with some pagan and occult elements mixed in, drives this story about how pride and greed turn people against one another and let hatred grow from one generation to the next. The story aims for redemption and reconciliation to heal the damage those years of hatred caused. In one revealing moment, Maria realizes that pride carries the deeper curse, and only redemption offers a way forward.

That message lines up with biblical principles that call people to humility, forgiveness, and reconciliation and that condemn pride, greed, and hatred. Maria’s willingness to sacrifice herself for the redemption of everyone reflects the biblical value of selflessness. The movie also champions family, love, perseverance, and forgiveness.

Magic, supernatural powers, a prophecy, and a curse rule the world of Moonacre Valley. Nature itself seems alive and bestows a special gift on the Moon Princess. The movie treats magic as a real force that people can use for good or evil, and it never warns against the occult itself. Still, it shows how quickly that power stirs up pride and greed. The pearls spark the feud, and the curse lifts only when Maria returns them to the sea rather than keep them. Parents may want to talk through these elements with younger viewers.

Scripture says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). The movie’s warning about pride points in that direction, even though its fairytale world stays magical rather than biblical.
