Should You Watch It?

Absolutely. This documentary unpacks what AI actually means and reveals how even experts struggle to define it. The story follows two groups of experts. The first group warns about AI's dangers and the harm it could inflict on humanity. Some fear AI could grow so powerful that it takes over the world.

One expert recounts a safety test at Anthropic, an AI company. In the scenario, the AI reads employee emails and discovers that the company plans to replace it. The AI also uncovers an affair that involves one of its lead designers. The AI then threatens to expose the affair if the employee shuts it down.

The second group highlights the good AI could bring to the world. These experts offer viewers peace and comfort, while the first group stirs fear. According to them, AI could help control climate change, invent machines that give the poorest people on Earth access to the best healthcare, and detect asteroids on a collision course with Earth.

At first, the documentary fills viewers with fear, but after the first forty minutes, the tone shifts toward hope. Ultimately, the documentary asks whether humanity will use AI to improve the world or let it spiral out of control. In the end, it reminds viewers that AI reflects the choices of the people who build it.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

The director, who appears in the movie, interviews a group of experts about artificial intelligence and its potential impact on humanity. He first asks them to define AI, but surprisingly, none offer a simple answer. The discussion explores both the possibilities and dangers of AI, from its potential to improve the world to concerns about its implications for humanity’s future.

The director shifts the conversation to a more personal note when he asks the experts about their desire for children and whether they believe now presents a good time to bring children into the world. Their differing answers reflect the film’s central question: should AI inspire fear about the future or hope for what lies ahead?

Is It Any Good?

This documentary earns every bit of four stars. It blends real people, real videos, and moving animation. The animations feature vibrant colors and scenic landscapes. Director Daniel Roher and his wife, Carolina Lindy, narrate and interview several experts from different AI and tech companies.

The story moves from one question to the next. At first, it feels fast because it moves through many experts and their opinions. However, it begins to slow down and takes form with a great storyline.

It includes mild profanity, with the main words being the s-word and f-word, although the f-word always gets bleeped out. Several obscenities occur when someone takes the Lord’s name in vain. Lastly, discussions about suicide, anxiety, self-harm, and adultery appear.

This one asks big questions about our future and leaves viewers with plenty to ponder long after the credits roll.

The Worldview

A strong moral worldview carries this documentary from start to finish. The movie frames the race to AI as a battle between peril and promise, good and evil. Look a little closer, though, and the movie makes a different point. The race to AI comes down to people who work together to make sure the technology serves good ends.

Every day, ordinary people, not machines, hold the responsibility to keep AI from destruction. The movie also pushes back on the idea that AI has "godlike" power. Humans built it, so human motives decide how it gets used. That puts the weight right where it belongs: on our hearts and intentions.

AI raises plenty of unknowns, but the movie holds few surprises for parents. Viewers hear 16 obscenities and profanities in all: eight "s" words, six bleeped "f" words, one "oh my God" and one "moron." Mild violence pops up here and there. The movie also discusses suicide, people who hurt themselves, anxiety, nuclear weapons, war, and "the end of the world."

Through it all, the documentary keeps its eyes on one big idea: the whole human race can unite to make sure AI does not harm the world. The movie places its hope in human cooperation, which gives its moral message a slight humanist lean, but it never treats AI as something to worship.
