Should You Watch It?

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 delivers what a sequel should: lively action, plenty of humor, strong character development, and heartfelt family moments. Sonic’s desire to be a hero is balanced by a fatherly lesson from Tom about patience and growing up. The movie also supports marriage, family, compassion, sacrifice, and reconciliation between enemies.

The content concerns are real but limited to a −1 level. The movie includes strong cartoon violence, punching, explosions, jeopardy, nine light profanities, and rude humor, including jokes about passing gas. Younger children may need more parental guidance.

For middle schoolers and up, this is a terrific, well-made action comedy with a strong pro-family moral. WORTH THE TRIP — MIDDLE SCHOOL AND UP.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Sonic is living with his adopted human parents, Tom and Maddie, but he wants to prove that he can be a hero. Meanwhile, Dr. Robotnik escapes from the mushroom planet with help from Knuckles, a red alien warrior seeking the powerful Master Emerald.

A young fox with two tails, Miles—nicknamed “Tails”—arrives to warn Sonic. Sonic and Tails must find the emerald before Robotnik and Knuckles do.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means this is a terrific sequel with excellent entertainment value. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 is cute, funny, lively, and exciting, with lots of jeopardy, action, and humor. The script is well-written, and the characters receive excellent development.

The cast does a wonderful job bringing the story to life. Jim Carrey is “a hoot” as the villain, while the other players deliver strong performances as well. The combination of live action and animation works especially well in the film’s energetic action comedy.

The Worldview

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 has a strong moral, pro-family worldview. Tom takes a fatherly approach to helping Sonic, counseling him to do the right thing and have patience as he grows up. The movie promotes marriage and family, while its Christian, redemptive content emphasizes sacrifice and reconciliation between enemies.

The film also supports the value of life through an act of compassion. This stands against Dr. Robotnik’s desire to dominate the world through machines. A wedding scene includes a priest making the Sign of the Cross, a visual reference to faith, the Triune God, and biblical principles.

The Master Emerald is described as a device created by Longclaw’s race of owls to control other gems of power. The film presents it as a technological artifact, though it functions like a powerful fantasy object. Overall, the movie’s central moral is positive: younger people should do what is right, grow with patience, and learn that family and compassion matter. “Let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:4).
