MATCHBOX THE MOVIE
Childhood friends fight to save the world in this high-octane action movie.
Should You Watch It?
Yes, especially if you’re an action fan. However, you should know exactly what comes along for the ride. This pulse-pounding movie, loosely based on the toy cars of the same name, follows a group of childhood friends who reconnect years later as adults and get tangled in an international plot involving a stolen nuclear warhead. The cast shines, and they all feel like real friends. Each character gets development; you get a real sense of who they are, and you understand why they’ve stayed friends for so long.
This movie delivers exciting car chases, helicopter flying, and more. While that makes it fun to watch, the story leans a little too heavily on action at the expense of plot. The fairly simple story drags on for two hours, which can make it feel slow at times.
Expect plenty of foul language and action violence, including car and helicopter crashes and physical fights. The violence isn’t graphic, and there’s very little blood. The villains also lie and steal to trigger a global war, while a character mentions marrying a man. Despite its toy-based premise, parents may want to steer children away from this one.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESAs kids, the “Matchbox Gang” loved playing with toy cars together. Years later, they reconnect as adults when Sean, who moved away as a child, returns for a funeral. When Sean’s work as a CIA agent drags the whole gang into an international plot, they embark on a round-the-world adventure to clear their names, find a missing bomb, and save the world.
Is It Any Good?
Three stars mean this one feels like a joyride, even if it has a few bumps along the way. The movie features a great cast that works well together, with excellent chemistry that makes them believable as childhood friends.
The characters are well developed, so viewers get a real sense of who they are, which raises the stakes in emotional moments. Thrilling car chases, helicopters and planes flying, and cool fight scenes explode onto the screen. The cinematography shines, and funny moments infuse laughter into the adventure.
The movie loses a star for the moments that slow down. The plot stays simple, yet the movie tops two hours, and at times it seems to stall just to run out the clock. Next to the intense action scenes, those slow spots feel even flatter. Still, parents who grew up with a pocket full of Matchbox cars will feel like kids again.
The Worldview
A strong moral worldview runs throughout the story, giving Christian families plenty to cheer about. The Matchbox Gang goes after a lost bomb to prevent a global catastrophe because they know it’s the right thing to do. Their loyalty to one another also stands out, calling to mind John 15:13, where Jesus honors the friend who lays down his life for others.
Some characters play dirty, especially Sean’s boss, who secretly orchestrates the entire plot to protect her CIA job. Still, wrongdoing has consequences, and justice ultimately prevails.
One moment does muddy the waters. A character mentions his husband, a brief reference to same-sex marriage that conflicts with God’s design for marriage in Genesis 2:24. The line passes quickly but adds a worldview element at odds with the otherwise positive moral themes. Even so, the story ultimately points toward courage, loyalty, and the hope that evil never gets the last word.
