Should You Watch It?
SAMSON offers exciting action and drama while keeping many details from Judges 13–16 intact. Its greatest strength is its clear Christian, biblical worldview: Samson’s supernatural strength comes from God, not magic, and the One True God of Israel is honored throughout.
The film also presents Samson honestly as a flawed man. He shows courage and receives God’s favor, yet repeatedly follows his desire for women and suffers because he disobeys God’s protective law. The production values falter at times, but the movie remains entertaining and may encourage viewers to open their Bibles.
The tradeoff is strong violence, even though it is not explicitly gory. Middle schoolers and older teenagers may be able to handle it, while parents should decide carefully for younger children. If your family can handle the violence, SAMSON is worth the trip for ages 13 and up.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESThe Hebrews in Israel live under the ruthless rule of the Philistines. A prophecy says Samson will help God’s people defeat their oppressors, and God has given him supernatural strength.
But Samson is unsure what God’s calling means. His desire for Philistine women draws him into dangerous relationships, while his brother and the rest of their people struggle to survive under crushing tributes. Samson must learn whether his strength will serve his own desires or God’s greater plan.
Is It Any Good?
Three stars means SAMSON is an entertaining, competently directed biblical epic with notable weaknesses. It includes exciting moments, including the fight between Samson and the lion and the foxes used to set fire to the Philistines’ fields.
Some performances are good, even great, while others feel stifled. Poorly done prosthetic beards and dialogue that sounds very western contribute to the cheesiness. The production values falter at times, but the movie’s action and drama give it solid appeal.
The Worldview
SAMSON has a very strong Christian, biblical worldview. God is shown as loving and forgiving, caring for His people and desiring their freedom. Samson’s strength comes purely from God’s Holy Spirit, and Samson repeatedly asks God for strength. Pagan gods are clearly shown to be false in comparison with the One True God of Israel.
The movie also presents Samson as complex. He displays strength of character and receives favor from God, but he strays when he follows his heart regarding women and is deceived. His story warns that disobeying God’s perfect and protective law brings danger.
The film takes creative liberties because Scripture gives limited details about Samson’s life. It adds Rallah and his relationship with Delilah as part of a plan to manipulate Samson, compresses the wedding feast, changes how often Delilah asks about Samson’s strength, and makes Delilah more sympathetic than Scripture implies. That last change is an unfortunate departure from the biblical account.
The central truth remains clear: God works through flawed people, but human strength and desire cannot replace obedience. “O Lord GOD, please remember me and please strengthen me only this once” (Judges 16:28).
