Should You Watch It?
This is the most family-friendly Pirates of the Caribbean movie yet, but its −2 Family Content rating means it is not a family movie-night choice for children or young teens. The film earns its four-star Entertainment Quality rating with exciting action, comedy, heart, superb structure, and tight direction.
Its strongest treasure is its moral center. Fathers and children fight for one another, sacrifice leads to reconciliation and redemption, and merciless revenge and uncontrollable rage are condemned. The climax is especially moving.
The cost is real. Scary villains, intense fantasy violence, frightening undead ghost zombies, off-color jokes, piracy, and drunkenness may trouble your conscience or overwhelm sensitive viewers. If you are a discerning adult, this is worth seeing; for younger viewers, choose something else.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESHenry, the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth, searches for Poseidon’s trident, believing it can free his father from the curse of the Flying Dutchman. He joins Captain Jack Sparrow and Carina, a young astronomer whose father left her a book containing possible clues to the trident’s location.
But Jack’s old nemesis, the cursed Spanish captain Salazar, has escaped the Devil’s Triangle and is hunting pirates to find him. Their search brings family, revenge, curses, and redemption toward a dangerous collision.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is an excellent, highly entertaining adventure. The movie is superbly structured and tightly directed, with plenty of comedy, action, and heart.
Johnny Depp is especially funny as a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow. Javier Bardem is menacing as Captain Salazar. Geoffrey Rush gives the best performance as Captain Barbossa, whose character arc provides the movie’s most moving element. The climax is wonderful, bringing the film’s emotional themes to a satisfying resolution.
The Worldview
The film’s worldview is strongly Christian and moral in its emphasis on family, fathers, sacrifice, and doing what is right for one’s family. It condemns merciless revenge and uncontrollable rage. Henry refuses to give up on his father, while Carina seeks to honor her own father. Their stories lead toward reconciliation, reunion, and redemption.
The movie also presents curses, the Greek god Poseidon and his trident, pagan mythology, witchcraft, and undead ghost zombies. Yet the ending shows curses and paganism finally being broken through sacrifice. A woman is falsely accused of witchcraft but is actually a smart astronomer and scientist, while another woman is presented as a witch and evil. Strong women also defy social conventions.
The film’s central theme is that family is the greatest treasure. Scripture says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Lots of intense and scary fantasy violence includes a Spanish captain shows no mercy toward the surviving pirates he conquers, explosion rips apart Spanish captain’s ship and turns him and his men into scary mutilated ghosts, pirates rob a bank’s safe but they try to drag the large safe, and they end up dragging the whole bank building through the streets of an island city, other explosions occur, lots of sword fighting with people dying, anti-hero’s about to be decapitated by a guillotine, and he looks in the basket below the guillotine and sees decapitated heads in it, woman is about to be hanged falsely for being a witch, scary shark ghosts are partly eaten away by explosion above and they chase after people in a rowboat, people tied up and threatened, villain orders several executions, etc..
Sex
A couple light off-color jokes about sex, such as anti-hero complains to heroic young man that a woman taking off her dress down to her elaborate underwear to swim for safety didn’t take off the rest of her clothes, and it’s implied that anti-hero had a rendezvous with a government official’s wife, but it’s not indicated how far they went.
Nudity
Brief upper male nudity, and woman strips down to her elaborate Victorian, full body underwear to swim for safety; alcohol use and drunkenness. Other Content: No smoking or drugs; and, piracy, attempted bank robbery, but it fails in comical, ironic fashion, villain is on a revenge mission, villain shows no mercy, pirates double-cross one another.
