Should You Watch It?
One Chance is an entertaining, inspiring movie with an unusually strong Christian, moral worldview. It is funny and heartwarming, and its central message is clear: encouragement, courage, and hard work can help you use the gifts God gave you and accomplish great things.
The film also contains 15 obscenities and profanities, crude commentary, some violence, implied fornication, a mention of pornography, upper male nudity, and drinking and drunkenness. Those concerns call for discernment, especially with younger viewers, but they do not erase the movie’s warmth, excellent acting, or hopeful message.
If your family includes teenagers mature enough for the content, One Chance is worth seeing together. For younger children, choose another film.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESPaul Potts has loved opera since childhood, but years of bullying have left him shy and uncertain about his voice. Few people believe in him.
Then Paul meets Julie-Ann, the girl he has been corresponding with online. Her encouragement helps him take a risk: entering a talent competition that could give him the chance to pursue his dream. But turning talent into confidence will require more than one performance.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is a superbly made, highly entertaining film. The movie is both funny and heartwarming, and the acting is excellent. James Corden does a remarkable job playing Paul Potts.
The story is compelling and inspirational, though its structure can feel episodic at times. That is the film’s main weakness. Otherwise, One Chance is very well produced and emotionally engaging.
