MONSTER HUNT 2
A funny family fantasy best for older children and adults.
Should You Watch It?
MONSTER HUNT 2 is an entertaining family fantasy with an exciting plot and a strong emotional center. The story follows Wuba’s parents as they search for their baby monster, who is being hunted by someone who wants to kill him. The film keeps the search moving with comedy, peril, disguises, and computer-generated monsters mixed with live action.
The movie is nicely crafted, and its fantasy world is engaging. However, it is not ideal for every child. The action includes lots of fighting, and the film contains brief scatological humor, a couple of implied drunken scenes that are rebuked, and references that younger children may find confusing or inappropriate.
For older children and adults, MONSTER HUNT 2 is worth seeing with discernment. For younger children, parents should preview the content or choose something gentler.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESWuba is a baby monster, the child of a human man and a monster queen. After being released into the wilderness, he becomes the target of monster hunters.
When Wuba’s parents learn he is in danger, they set out to find him. Along the way, they discover special powers that help them locate him and seek assistance from others. Their search becomes a race to reach Wuba before the hunters do.
Is It Any Good?
Three stars means MONSTER HUNT 2 is a good, entertaining film with some limitations. Its plot is exciting and funny enough to hold attention, while the mixture of live-action performers and computer-generated monsters is nicely crafted.
The film does a good job interweaving the computer-generated creatures with human action and peril. Monsters disguise themselves as humans, keeping viewers wondering whether characters are really human or monsters. The story is never boring, though the violence and some mature references limit its audience.
The Worldview
MONSTER HUNT 2 is set in Ancient China within a mythological world. The source review notes no references to false religions, while the content section identifies a light pagan fantasy worldview. The film centers on a family trying to protect a child and on the hope of restoring peace to a troubled monster world.
The movie also includes references to males giving birth when discussing monsters. These ideas do not fit a biblical understanding of human identity and reproduction. The film contains some light moral elements, but its fantasy worldview is not presented through a Christian framework.
The film’s longing for peace and protection connects with Scripture’s call to pursue peace: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9).
