Should You Watch It?
If you want a quiet, deeply moving drama about love late in life, this is worth your time. Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn give superb performances as two senior citizens whose unexpected romance brings joy to a lonely Christmas season.
The movie also asks you to remain present when someone you love is confused, troubled, or difficult to reach. Its sad revelations give the romance added weight, while its positive references to Christmas and Jesus point toward love, life, marriage, and steadfastness.
The costs are brief, mostly light foul language, alcohol use, some light violence, and an implication of premarital sex. For teenagers and adults who can exercise discernment about those elements, see it.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESRobert Malone is an elderly grocery store clerk facing a lonely Christmas. His tree has one present beneath it—from himself to himself.
Then Mary, a beautiful older woman who lives across the street, enters his life and asks him on a date. Their awkward beginning grows into a tender romance, even as Robert experiences troubling nightmares and struggles with painful confusion. Their story becomes a moving test of love, memory, and hope.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is a highly entertaining and accomplished drama. It is small and intimate, yet touching, funny, and heartbreaking. The romance between Robert and Mary feels genuine, and the film’s emotional impact grows as their relationship deepens.
The acting is the chief strength. Landau and Burstyn give superb, Oscar-worthy performances, with Landau carrying a particularly demanding role. The movie is also praised for its poignant Christmas setting and inspiring references to Jesus.
