Should You Watch It?
HOME ALONE 3 is well-crafted entertainment with a quick pace, carefully executed sight gags, precise direction, and touching moments. Its good values include protecting the home, honesty, family loyalty, and compassion for the elderly.
The tradeoff is its humor. Some of the slapstick is painful and pointedly scatological, and the movie comes close to offensive sexual material. The result may be dynamite entertainment for young boys, while parents and little girls may find the gags wear thin.
If your family enjoys broad physical comedy and can exercise discernment about its rougher humor, this is worth seeing.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESEight-year-old Alex Pruitt has chicken pox and is left home alone while his parents work. At the same time, four industrial spies steal US stealth missile technology and hide its chip inside a remote-controlled toy car.
When Alex receives the toy by mistake, he notices suspicious activity in his neighborhood. After the police dismiss his warnings, Alex realizes his home may be next—and prepares to protect it.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means HOME ALONE 3 is highly entertaining and well made. The humor, pacing, and sight gags are very well executed, while the direction is precise and everything serves the plot.
The movie also includes touching moments, especially near the end, when love abounds and Alex is vindicated. Its weakness is not its construction but its reliance on painful and scatological slapstick, which may limit its appeal for some viewers.
The Worldview
HOME ALONE 3 presents home as a vital refuge and treats the threat to that refuge seriously. It affirms protecting the home, honesty, family, loyalty, and compassion for the elderly. Alex’s determination to defend his house gives the story its moral center.
