In 1920s Mexico, President Calles tries to shut down the churches through severe restrictions and violence. A resistance movement called the Cristeros rises because of its commitment to Christ.

The film follows Enrique, a former general who is not a strong believer but joins the Cristeros because he believes in religious freedom and loves his committed Christian wife. Jose, a young thief, also becomes part of this struggle.

Three stars means this is a strong, worthwhile film with noticeable flaws. FOR GREATER GLORY contains wonderful scenes and great characters, and some moments are so haunting that they remain in the memory. Andy Garcia gives a terrific performance as Enrique.
