Should You Watch It?

You should see Courageous if you want a movie that takes fatherhood seriously and is willing to move you deeply. Its emotional scenes can fill a whole box of hankies, but the film wisely balances grief and conviction with witty dialogue and terrific physical comedy.

The movie’s Christian and moral vision is clear. It emphasizes love, care, concern, selfless giving, integrity, mentoring, and the time and energy required to raise children well. The story also includes intense action violence, drug-related wrongdoing, and police corruption, though the source review reports no foul language, sexual activity, or nudity.

The structure is loose, the film runs a little long, and some scenes repeat or interrupt the main story. Even so, its call to revive fatherhood lands with unusual force. Courageous is worth the trip for teenagers and adults, especially parents.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

In Albany, Georgia, a friendly police department faces a growing gang threat. Nathan Hayes joins three close friends there after transferring from Atlanta, while Adam, the group’s leader, struggles to be the father his children need.

After tragedy strikes Adam’s family, he begins to reconsider his priorities. His realization moves his police friends and the Hispanic carpenter working for him to confront their own failures and pursue a more faithful kind of fatherhood.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means Courageous is an unusually effective film despite its structural weaknesses. It contains extraordinary, poignant, heart-rending scenes alongside some of the funniest moments in filmmaking. The witty dialogue is hilarious, and the physical comedy works especially well.

The acting, dialogue, and direction are described as the best yet in the Kendrick brothers’ movies. The story, however, resolves too soon, includes several auxiliary scenes, and sometimes repeats its points. Some sequences illustrate valid lessons about fatherhood while breaking the flow of the major plotline. Even so, the film captures the heartstrings and becomes, in many ways, a unique, great movie.

The Worldview

Courageous presents a clear, evangelistic Christian and moral worldview. It includes very real conversions and strongly emphasizes fatherhood, love, care, concern, selfless giving, integrity, mentoring, and devoting time and energy to others. Its central conviction is that men must take responsibility for being present and faithful fathers.

The film also treats fatherhood as a calling that requires courage and sacrifice. Its characters face serious failures, including absent parenting, a child fathered out of wedlock, divorce, and other issues that are not easily overcome. The story’s Christian message is direct rather than subtle, and the film can sometimes feel like an illustrated sermon.

At its heart, the movie calls fathers to love their children through faithful presence and moral leadership. That aligns with Scripture’s command: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).
