Should You Watch It?

CHARLY offers a love story without the usual obsession with premarital sex. Sam wants marriage, family and lasting love, while Charly begins as a vivacious woman who finds his Mormon beliefs amusing. Their relationship includes self-esteem, forgiveness, repentance and the discovery of what real love means.

The larger problem is theological. The movie promotes Mormonism as a joyful conversion, and its message about eternal families conflicts with the New Testament’s teaching about marriage in the resurrection. The film’s clean romantic content does not outweigh its heavy-handed religious purpose.

Because the movie has some merit but carries serious theological concerns, watch it only at home and only as a discerning adult.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Sam is asked to pick up Charly, a dynamic young woman from New York who is running away from a relationship. She quickly disrupts his orderly life and challenges his Mormon beliefs about marriage and family.

Charly becomes intrigued by Sam’s faith and begins reading the Book of Mormon. Their relationship faces a painful test when Sam learns about her past, forcing both of them to confront what love, forgiveness and commitment require.

Is It Any Good?

Two stars means CHARLY has worthwhile moments but does not fully come together. As a love story, it is refreshing, with strong emotional scenes and a meaningful movement toward self-esteem, forgiveness, repentance and real love.

The film tries to tell several stories: Charly’s conversion, the couple’s marriage and a later battle with cancer. The review says any one of these could have supported a feature film. Without a clearly articulated premise to unite them, the plot feels divided rather than seamless.

The Worldview

CHARLY presents Mormonism as a source of joy and as the answer to Charly’s search for belonging. It includes images and positive references to Jesus, but its central religious message is conversion to Mormonism. The review identifies this as the film’s major problem and describes the religion as false, cultic and heretical.

The film promotes the idea of eternal families: that a husband may pray to bless his wife so she can join him after death on another planet, where he will become the god of that planet. This differs from Jesus’ teaching that resurrected men and women “neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven” (Matthew 22:30, ESV). The film also contains works-based morality and legalism, while the review points to Christ’s death as freedom from the works of religion and an invitation into an eternal, personal relationship with Him.

Its strongest moral themes are marriage, family, forgiveness, repentance and sacrificial love. Those themes can point toward biblical truth, but the movie places them inside a misleading religious framework.

The Final Word

CHARLY has a clean, emotionally sincere romance, but its central religious message is not a small detail. Because the film promotes Mormonism, watch it only at home and only with adult discernment. Our answer is WAIT FOR HOME — ADULTS ONLY. For other choices, see.
