Should You Watch It?

If your family enjoys comic-book adventures, Batman Forever offers energetic action, colorful design, and a moody hero at its center. It is lighter and more moral than its predecessor, and its central lessons are clear: revenge does not heal grief, double-mindedness leads to instability, and pride ends in a fall.

The tradeoff is a weak plot and some content that may trouble parents, including slapstick and cartoon-type violence, sexual innuendo, provocative clothing, and occult imagery. The film also contains 11 obscenities and three vulgarities.

For middle-school-age viewers and older who can handle those concerns, this is worth watching. Parents should use discernment for younger children.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Batman faces two dangerous enemies: Two-Face, who seeks vengeance, and the Riddler, whose invention gives him a terrifying new power. Psychiatrist Dr. Chase Meridian is drawn to Batman, while Dick Grayson becomes Batman’s sidekick Robin after tragedy strikes his family. Together, Batman and Robin must protect Chase and bring the villains to justice.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means a solid, entertaining comic-book adventure with notable weaknesses. The movie delivers action, brilliant design, and a moody central character. Its colorful fantasy world and energetic set pieces should entertain viewers who love comic books.

The main weakness is the plot, which falls short. The film also includes slapstick violence and sexual innuendo. Overall, it is an engaging but imperfect action fantasy.

The Worldview

The film presents a basically biblical moral worldview. Batman teaches Robin that revenge is not an answer to grief. Two-Face embodies the instability of a double-minded life, while the Riddler demonstrates that pride comes before a fall. The story also emphasizes forgiveness and healing while condemning revenge, indecision, and humanism.

The film’s moral lessons are stronger than its plot, but its worldview is mixed with demonic-type gang members and an occultic talisman. Its central warning about revenge aligns with Scripture: “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God” (Romans 12:19).
