YOUNG WASHINGTON is still in the box office Top 10, three weeks after its release.
“John Erwin’s biopic starring William Franklyn-Miller as George grossed $3.7 million at 2,200 locations,” Deadline reported, adding that the movie has already made a cumulative $41 million and that there is a sequel already in the works.
YOUNG WASHINGTON also gave Angel Studios its “largest-ever three-day opening weekend for a live-action title,” as well as its second-biggest opening weekend, behind the animated DAVID.
An official synopsis of YOUNG WASHINGTON reads, “Before he was the Father of a Nation, he was a soldier fighting to survive. A single misstep thrusts young George Washington into the center of a global conflict, testing his honor, loyalty, and courage. As alliances crumble and the frontier erupts into war, he must confront not only his enemies but the man he’s becoming. This is the untold story of Young Washington.”
Movieguide®’s review calls YOUNG WASHINGTON “one of the best, most gripping biographical and historical war movies ever made,” and its continued box office success shows that audiences are eager for uplifting stories like this one.
“It’s like PRIDE AND PREJUDICE meets THE REVENANT,” writer and director Jon Erwin said in an interview with Fandango, describing how the movie balances brutal battle scenes with quieter, emotional moments.
He also praised William Franklyn-Miller, who plays the titular role: “We wanted that in the lead — some sort of character or grit or determination or presence, or some gravitas, I guess — and that’s what William brought. He crushed it, and he really carries the film.”
In an interview with UPI, Franklyn-Miller spoke about bringing Washington to life, saying, “This guy is such a known figure. We all know him as [being on] the dollar bill, as the first president of the United States and I think bringing the human aspect to his life is what helped me portray him.”
“At the end of the day, in this story, he’s a 21-year-old boy and I think bringing that aspect to him was super-important,” he continued.
Franklyn-Miller called his part in YOUNG WASHINGTON a “dream role for an actor,” adding, “It’s got everything in it.”
“You’ve got the fights, the battles, the emotion when it comes to the loss of a loved one. You’ve got a love story in it, as well, and, really, the main thing is the ambition of this guy and finding out what place he has in the world and how he gets to that point,” he explained.
YOUNG WASHINGTON is now playing in theaters.
