Actor Will Estes thought he had finished playing Jamie Reagan, but a BOSTON BLUE script that lets the younger Reagan brother confront old tensions with Danny persuaded him to return.
“There was always this conflict between the brothers, and in this episode, there’s a lot of resolution, and there’s a lot of moving through that and sort of facing it head-on,” Estes told Entertainment Weekly of what helped draw him back.
For Estes, the appeal went beyond another chance to wear Jamie’s badge. He had put the character aside after BLUE BLOODS ended, believing that chapter had closed, until the new episode offered something he wanted to explore.
The reunion arrives in “Blood Diamonds,” which CBS has scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Jamie’s visit pulls him and Danny, played by BOSTON BLUE star and executive producer Donnie Wahlberg, into a diamond heist connected to a violent family feud.
That case puts the brothers’ relationship alongside another family’s troubles. CBS says Danny and Jamie must confront lingering tensions of their own, giving the visit a purpose beyond catching up between investigations.
TVLine’s first-look added that Jamie comes to Boston for a police conference tied to developments in his career. Series co-creator Brandon Sonnier explained that Jamie is taking on a new professional role while also embracing fatherhood.

Those changes matter to Estes’ account of the reunion. Jamie is now a father, and Danny’s move means his older brother is no longer nearby as he enters that part of his life.
“He’s carrying a little bit of weight with him,” Estes described Jamie before explaining how becoming a parent and living apart from Danny shape his arrival.
He pointed to the Reagans’ Sunday dinners as the reason that distance carries particular weight. For a family accustomed to gathering at the same table every week, a move to another city changes more than the drive to work.
That gives the episode a recognizable family problem beneath its police-story machinery: loving a sibling does not prevent disappointment when life pulls you in different directions. Estes’ interest lies in the brothers facing those feelings rather than simply stepping back into familiar banter.
Danny, meanwhile, has built connections in a new department. CBS’ second-season description places his partnership with Detective Lena Silver, played by actress Sonequa Martin-Green, alongside his responsibilities as a mentor and father.
Estes praised the spinoff for continuing the original characters’ legacy while making room for new people. His comments suggest he sees Jamie’s return as a chance to develop a relationship, not merely preserve it exactly as viewers last saw it.
“And if they write stuff like what they wrote in this episode, that I got to do, then there are still stories to tell,” he said.
For now, the concrete promise is a visit that makes the brothers deal with what has changed. “Blood Diamonds” will air on CBS, with live streaming for Paramount+ Premium subscribers and next-day on-demand access for Essential subscribers.
