BOSTON BLUE is sending Danny Reagan and Lena Silver into a biker-gang standoff as its executive producers promise bigger action in the show’s second season.

“As we move into Season 2, we are expanding our world, and we’re also expanding our action vocabulary,” executive producer Brandon Sonnier told TVLine ahead of the Oct. 16 episode.

The episode, “Ripple Effect,” follows the detectives as they pursue a lead in an attack on a fellow officer. Actors Donnie Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green play Danny and Lena, respectively, whose investigation brings them face-to-face with a dangerous biker gang.

TVLine’s exclusive preview set up an ambush but stopped before the ensuing shootout, according to the outlet. That left viewers with a warning about where the case is headed, rather than a look at how the detectives get out of it.

Executive producer Brandon Margolis credited writer Terence Paul Winter and producing director Sherwin Shilati for the sequence. CBS’ episode announcement lists Winter’s story credit and Shilati as director, and confirms that Lena’s father helps with the lead that brings the partners into the standoff.

Margolis described the series as a family drama inside a police procedural, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s action credentials part of the equation. For this episode, that means making room for police battling on a bridge without dropping the relationships that drive the show.

For Sonnier, that expansion follows a first season spent laying groundwork and introducing the characters. His comments point to a wider world for Danny and Lena, not simply a new case to solve each week.

The family side has plenty happening in this episode, too. Boston District Attorney Mae Silver faces fresh pressure from political rival Thad Longfellow, while young officers Sean Reagan and Jonah Silver try to put a workplace misstep right.

Actress Marisa Ramirez also returns as Detective Maria Baez, who faces an unexpected family matter. CBS lists actors Erik King and Ryan Broussard among the returning guests, playing Crispus Williams and Detective Brian Rodgers, respectively.

That mix fits the premise laid out in CBS’ description of the second season: Danny must balance being a mentor with being a father. Sean, played by actor Mika Amonsen, is building his own police career alongside Jonah, played by actor Marcus Scribner.

Lena’s family brings another set of responsibilities to the badge. Actress Gloria Reuben plays Mae, actress Maggie Lawson plays Police Superintendent Sarah Silver, and actor Ernie Hudson plays their family’s Baptist pastor, Reverend Edwin Peters.

For viewers who followed Danny from BLUE BLOODS, the new city still comes with familiar questions about family loyalty and the demands of police work. This week puts those concerns beside a particularly dangerous assignment for the two lead detectives.

The new season premiered Oct. 9, one week before this episode, according to CBS. “Ripple Effect” continues the investigation into the attack on Rodgers rather than starting the partners over with an unrelated assignment.

New episodes air on Fridays; Paramount+ Premium subscribers can watch live through their local CBS feed, while Essential subscribers can watch on demand the following day.
