What His Fourth Cancer Battle Is Teaching This Influencer About God

Dylan Mandell, a 23-year-old Christian speaker who has faced cancer four times, recently described faithfulness in suffering without pretending that pain is easy.

“I lift my hands to the Lord and give thanks to Him in the midst of cancer because I’m trying to be faithful.” Mandell said in a video posted earlier this month.

Mandell opened the video by saying that his assignment is to share the Gospel publicly while he is still hurting. He wants viewers to see a human being in weakness — not a person claiming to have every answer or to be untouched by fear.

According to his account, he received a fourth cancer diagnosis roughly a year before the recording and has continued to experience pain. He says he has waited through months without the breakthrough he believes God has promised, a description that makes the video as much about endurance as expectation.

Mandell also draws a careful distinction between thanking God for cancer and thanking God for His faithfulness in the middle of it. He says he is not grateful for the disease itself, but for the hope he believes God gives him while he faces pain and uncertainty.

That distinction gives the testimony its most grounded moment. Mandell does not describe faith as a performance of toughness; he describes it as lifting his hands when he feels weak and choosing obedience without claiming to understand the whole story.

He turned repeatedly to Scripture, including Psalm 73 and Psalm 121. The first passage acknowledges that the body and heart may fail while God remains the strength of the heart, while the second directs the believer to look to the Lord for help.

“He’s not asking you to be strong. He’s asking you to be strong in Him.” Mandell said as he encourages viewers to bring their weakness, fear and brokenness to God rather than hide them.

From there, he urged listeners to return to the Lord in pain, sin, addiction and discouragement. That is Mandell’s spiritual counsel and testimony, not a clinical explanation for illness or a promise that every believer will receive the same physical outcome.

The video does make stronger claims about healing. Mandell said he believes God will fully heal his cancer and argued that biblical promises should carry more authority for him than the pain he feels in his body.

Mandell’s message is strongest when it refuses to confuse courage with pretending. He said he is a broken person in need of Jesus, and he invited viewers to meet God honestly in the middle of pain rather than waiting to appear invulnerable.

For Movieguide® readers, the testimony offers a picture of hope that leaves room for grief, unanswered prayer and professional care. Mandell did not ask viewers to celebrate cancer; he asked them to hold fast to faith while they face what is in front of them.
