Television host and carpenter Ty Pennington still knows a thing or two about impossible renovation deadlines, but he says ROCK THE BLOCK gives him something different from EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION: a chance to mentor.
“I can sort of lend that to those guys to sort of keep their eyes on the prize and stay focused and try and be as creative as they possibly can,” Pennington said, sharing his experience with the competing teams in a Hollywood+ interview.
Asked how the two shows compare, Pennington recalled the extraordinary pressure of building a house in a week on EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION. He still recognizes that deadline-driven intensity on ROCK THE BLOCK, but now he can help other designers stay focused while they work through their own creative challenges.
There is plenty of experience to draw from: Pennington’s television résumé lists his original EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION run from 2004 to 2012 and his ROCK THE BLOCK hosting role beginning in 2021. Before either, viewers knew him as a carpenter on TRADING SPACES.
The shift does not mean he has lost his enthusiasm for getting his hands dirty. When HGTV announced his guest appearance in its EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION reboot in 2019, the network described him returning as a hands-on renovator, working alongside volunteers and the design team.

“I’m passionate about design and making positive change in people’s lives,” Pennington said at the time, explaining what drew him back to the home-transformation series.
Now, helping experienced designers do their best work gives that enthusiasm another outlet. In the Hollywood+ conversation, he said he loves watching people figure out creative problems, and he pointed to the variety of houses and design approaches as part of ROCK THE BLOCK’s appeal.
The next group will have plenty to figure out. HGTV says Season 8 will bring four teams to a new block just outside Nashville, Tennessee, for seven episodes scheduled to premiere in early 2027.
The homes will share identical floor plans and square footage, but their exterior facades will differ. Each team gets seven weeks and a $275,000 budget to put its stamp on a property, with the highest appraised value determining the winner; bragging rights and a street named in the winning team’s honor await.
Returning competitors include married real estate developers Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt of 100 DAY DREAM HOME. Home renovation and design professional Mina Starsiak Hawk of GOOD BONES will team with contractor and real estate expert Scott McGillivray of RENOVATION RESORT SHOWDOWN.
Interior designer and television host Sabrina Soto of THE HIGH LOW PROJECT will partner with real estate developer and designer Anthony Carrino of KITCHEN COUSINS. Television host and Broadway performer Paige Davis will join builder and designer Carter Oosterhouse, bringing two more familiar TRADING SPACES faces into Pennington’s orbit.
For longtime viewers, that lineup mixes familiar faces with a fresh set of challenges. For Pennington, it offers another chance to pass along what years of ambitious builds have taught him: how to keep moving when the clock is running and the design still needs work.
