TOY STORY 5 has passed $800 million worldwide after three weekends, giving Pixar another major family-movie success.

“TOY STORY 5 has remained a draw among family audiences despite competition from another kid-friendly adventure, MINIONS & MONSTERS,” Variety reported.

The animated sequel has earned $381 million in North America and $427.3 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $808.6 million, according to the trade outlet. That pace puts the movie on course to pass $1 billion and potentially move beyond TOY STORY 4’s $1.07 billion total as the series’ top earner.

TOY STORY 5 opened in mid-June with $160 million, a franchise best that surpassed TOY STORY 4’s $120 million opening. Variety also reported that the launch ranks as the second-largest animated opening weekend ever, behind INCREDIBLES 2.

Domestically, the fifth entry now stands as the second-biggest Hollywood release of the year, after THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE.

Box-office totals do not tell families whether a movie deserves their time, but they do show the enduring pull of a story that has stayed with several generations. Parents who grew up with Woody and Buzz Lightyear now have children meeting the characters through a new chapter.

Director Andrew Stanton returns to a familiar question for a new moment: what happens when a child’s attention shifts from toys to technology? In the movie, Bonnie becomes attached to a small smart tablet called Lilypad, drawing Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the group into a conflict many parents will recognize.

That premise gives the movie a timely family conversation starter. Screens can entertain and connect people, yet children also need imagination, presence and play that do not depend on a device asking for the next tap.

TOY STORY has long found emotional weight in the bond between children and the toys that accompany them through changing seasons. The series can be funny and adventurous without forgetting that growing up includes letting go, remembering well and choosing care for others.

The $250 million production budget means the theatrical success matters commercially, but the franchise reaches far beyond ticket sales. Variety reported that TOY STORY generates more than $1 billion each year in worldwide consumer products, games and publishing revenue even when a new installment is not in theaters.

For Movieguide® readers, the stronger question remains what a family gains from the time it spends together. A popular movie can become one more hurried distraction, or it can open an honest talk about technology, friendship and the things children value when the screen goes dark.

With its box-office momentum still strong, TOY STORY 5 is likely to keep adding to its total in the coming weeks. Families considering a trip can look past the milestone and ask whether this new adventure gives them something worthwhile to discuss on the ride home, after the snacks are gone and the credits have rolled.
