FULL HOUSE’s Jodie Sweetin and John Stamos have supported each other for years, especially through their respective sobriety journeys.
“John and I really, really connected in a lot of ways over [being sober],” Sweetin said during an episode of THE DORY JACKSON INTERVIEW. “We have been there to celebrate each other’s big successes and milestones, and I am so glad that I got to be an example of attraction rather than promotion, which is a big principle in recovery.”
Sweetin has been sober since 2011; Stamos, since 2015.
“You get the opportunity to become a different person, and once you start actually liking that person, it becomes really hard to go back and continue destructive behavior,” Sweetin said of sobriety. “You kind of go like, ‘Oh, wait, hold on, I want to take care of this little person inside here and see what they’re capable of.’ And I’ve been really fortunate to be able to do that.”

She added, “For so long I think people like me use drugs and alcohol to not at all be attached to who they are, and so to be like, no, no, no, I like me, I don’t need anything, I’m good, is very freeing.”
In an interview with PEOPLE, Sweetin explained why she shares her sobriety journey with others.
“I speak about my experience growing up in the entertainment business, what my life was like after, some of the struggles and things I went through and where my life is today,” she said. “It’s a story with a message of second chances and turning things around and being able to overcome some adversity.”
Stamos has also been open about his addiction struggles, writing in his 2015 memoir that he went “off the rails” that year. He would receive a misdemeanor DUI later that year, then enter rehab.
The actor has credited his friends and family with helping him maintain his sobriety, including Sweetin.
“Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path and when I finally humbled myself to ask for your help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth had become the master of wisdom and was right by my side during some of the most difficult days of my life,” he said while presenting an award to Sweetin for her 2019 memoir.
Sweetin and Stamos’ FULL HOUSE bond has gone far beyond their days on the hit sitcom, with the two actors supporting each other as they continue on their sobriety journeys.
