FULL HOUSE star and Teddy Bear Award® winner Candace Cameron Bure doesn’t take her body for granted.

In an episode of her podcast, the actress acknowledged that a lot of women talk about themselves and their bodies negatively, but it is important to be grateful for what they have.

“I think about the gratitude that I have for my body, that I literally have feet that I can still walk,” she explained. “…That I can pick up my kids. I can go grocery shopping. I can go to work.”

In the past, Bure struggled with hating her body and actually said she still is a bulimic because she struggles with her thoughts but does not act on them. When she was a child in FULL HOUSE, she went to Weight Watchers and was often on a diet, which lowered her self-esteem.

“I’ve whipped my body,” Bure told podcast guests Allie Schnacky and daughter, Natasha Bure Perry, in another episode. “I’ve spoken to it so harshly. So mean.”

The realization came to her one night after a dream that was much like the story of Balaam and the donkey in Numbers 22.

“God allowed my body to speak back, and my body said back to me, ‘Have I not been the body that’s carried you all the days of your life? …Why do you hurt me so badly, and why do you talk to me so badly, and why do you treat me this way?” she recalled.

“And it was like this amazing revelation in my life,” she continued. “And the weirdest story out of the Bible, that God spoke to me about how mean I’ve been to my body. I never saw it that way — it’s this beautiful amazing thing that God gave me.”

This experience completely shifted Bure’s perspective of her body, and she regretted abusing it.

“I was so mean to myself…and looking back it breaks my heart. Learning to speak with kindness to my body has been a journey, and I know I’m not alone in this. To those who relate — I hope you can feel me giving you the biggest virtual hug right now. And I hope you’ll join me in showing ourselves the grace and love we truly deserve,” she said.

Bure’s journey to love her body has been lifelong, and she’s still healing. If you’ve ever felt hate towards your body for its weight, looks or injury or illness, remember who made it and be grateful for what you do have.
