For worship artist Tauren Wells, nothing is more important than “the condition of [his] soul.”

“I wish I knew this from a younger [age],” he shared on the “Leadership Lean In” podcast. “I wish I had this understanding of, ‘my character really matters.’”

Wells made it clear it’s never “too late to have the revelation,” nor is it “too early to realize what is happening in my soul matters.”

“It matters supremely,” he emphasized. “It matters more than my talent, my gifts, my opportunities, the house I grew up in. Any of that is — what is the condition of my soul, my mind, my will, and my emotions? How aligned are those places? How integrated are those places? You can do work as a 25 year old to make sure that your mind is pure. Your heart is pure. Your will is submitted to the will of God to be someone who’s being pastored, someone who can hear no, someone who can get feedback.”

Wells has previously spoken about his calling and how he hopes to share the gospel with others through his music.

“God has been gracious enough to open doors that I never could,” he told CCM Magazine in 2019. “When I was a kid I wanted to sing and dance pretty much nonstop. That’s never changed. What has changed is the purpose behind it.”

Wells continued, “When I was 16 I felt called to ministry. When God calls us to do something for Him He often uses what we already have to accomplish it. For me, the music is just a vehicle that delivers the ministry that God wants done in people’s lives and that’s what I’m here for. Not just for the songs and the music or the creative but to see people’s lives enriched and transformed through Jesus-centered ministry.”

In a 2023 interview with Songwriter Universe, Wells explained that his “faith informs everything that I do.”

“And it’s not just the faith that changes things here and now,” he added. “It’s a faith that holds on to the reality that there is something beyond here and now, that there is something beyond time.”

Wells continued, “There are times when God solves our problems overnight. But then there’s also the reality that we are living toward a day, that for those who have placed their faith in Jesus, when all this other stuff goes away. And when this life has found us with so many tears and so many disappointments, and so much heartbreak, that there will be a day that every tear is wiped from our eyes. That the only thing that we will experience for eternity will be the joy and the peace of God.”

Through his music, Wells shares his faith and encouraging others to think about the condition of their character.
