Portraying Jesus’ crucifixion pushed THE CHOSEN actor Jonathan Roumie into some of the hardest work of his life, but gratitude still shapes the way he talks about the role.

“I thank God every day for the opportunity to get to step into these sandals and portray His Son and pray that I do Him some kind of justice and bring more people to Him,” he said in a Movieguide® interview.

Roumie described the strange feeling of nearing the end of a series that has occupied years of his life. Looking back, he said the work still feels much closer to its beginning than its conclusion.

“Yeah, it’s kind of surreal,” he said.

Getting to the cross, though, meant resisting the temptation to live there before the story reached it. Roumie explained that people had asked him about portraying the crucifixion in earlier seasons, when he could not answer that question and stay present in the work in front of him.

That focus was not a new strategy for Season 6. He said every season requires him to stay grounded in the moment rather than mentally going somewhere else.

Now that he has portrayed the crucifixion, Roumie can speak about its demands firsthand. He described the work as the most difficult task of his professional life and, to a large extent, his personal life, explaining how much space it takes up.

The season’s scope helps explain the weight of that assignment. According to the official Season 6 description, the story follows Jesus’ final day through the people who love Him and those who condemn Him, bringing the series to the cross.

In a separate interview with Fox News Digital at ChosenCon, Roumie described preparing through prayer. He said he asked the Lord what He wanted people to see and experience, and whether he could experience even a tiny fraction of what Jesus endured.

He also told that outlet that the work challenged him physically and emotionally. His stated goal was not simply to convey suffering, but to help viewers understand Jesus’ love, mercy and compassion.

Back in the Movieguide® conversation, Roumie addressed another responsibility that comes with the role: portraying Jesus’ full humanity without losing sight of His full divinity. He described knowing both are true rather than consciously calculating how to balance them.

“I don’t know that that’s something that I’m consciously thinking about other than the fact that I know it’s true,” he said.

For viewers waiting to see that work, Prime Video and 5&2 Studios announced that Season 6 begins streaming Nov. 15, 2026, with three episodes, followed by weekly installments through Dec. 6. The season finale will arrive as a standalone theatrical release in spring 2027.

Families who want to catch up before the new episodes arrive can find Seasons 1–5 on Prime Video and THE CHOSEN app.

The announcement also identifies the Resurrection as the focus of the seventh and final season. The cross is not the end of the story — and Roumie’s hope remains that his portrayal will bring people closer to the One he plays.
