John Schneider spent decades leaping over trouble as Bo Duke and raising Superman as Jonathan Kent, but one of his most personal comebacks began with a laugh he did not expect.
“You kind of learn to embrace grief. But I met her, and I started to laugh,” actor and country singer John Schneider told “Arroyo Grande” podcast host Raymond Arroyo in an Aug. 19 interview.
Schneider lost his wife, movie and music producer Alicia Allain, to breast cancer in February 2023. She was 53, and Schneider publicly leaned on his Christian hope as he mourned her.
Television host Dee Dee Sorvino understood that road all too well. Her husband, GOODFELLAS actor Paul Sorvino, died in July 2022, and a mutual friend later introduced her to Schneider so the two widowed entertainers could help each other through grief.
“We have two people that get it,” Schneider said.
Their first in-person conversation unfolded at the Hollywood Museum during an Abbott and Costello exhibit. Schneider said both recoiled at the idea of dating or moving forward, but they kept talking — and laughing — for four hours.

“It was somehow a lot less repulsive,” he joked.
The four-hour hello turned into a marriage. Schneider and Sorvino wed in a surprise Las Vegas ceremony in July 2024, nearly 17 months after Allain’s death and almost two years after Paul Sorvino’s death.
In the interview, Schneider did not offer grief as a tidy problem with a quick fix. He urged people facing a similar loss to care for the day in front of them, stay close to friends who genuinely love them and avoid making a new relationship the next assignment.
Schneider told viewers that a future companion might appear in an utterly ordinary place: a gas station, an exhibit or even Walmart.
“God wants us to be equally yoked,” Schneider said, adding that God also wants people to laugh.
Schneider kept returning to the same habit: recognize the next opportunity, then put it to work. He recalled bluffing his way onto the set of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT at 16, then persuading producers at 18 that a boy from suburban New York could become the good old boy at the center of THE DUKES OF HAZZARD.
The series still defines much of Schneider’s public image, while SMALLVILLE introduced him to another generation as Clark Kent’s adoptive father. TV Insider’s overview of his career also points to his long-running role on THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS and a country career that was far more than a celebrity side project.
Between 1981 and 1987, Schneider placed 17 songs on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, with 10 reaching the top 10, according to Billboard. Those numbers put real weight behind his second career, but Schneider also said he looks for one chance every day to make somebody else’s life a little better.
“Somebody else’s day was a little bit better because I was in it,” he said of the opportunity he tries to recognize each day.
Schneider’s love for Allain did not disappear when he found joy with Sorvino. He found room for both grief and laughter, and he gives faith and friendship much of the credit.
“Laugh every day,” Schneider said when Arroyo asked for the best advice he had ever received.
