It wasn’t until Bear Grylls came to faith that he felt “true peace.”

“I’ve never been very religious,” he explained in a video posted to Instagram. “I never grew up wanting religion. I always felt judged as a teenager whenever I met people of faith. They always looked disapproving.”

The TV survivalist continued, “I was seeking life and laughter and friendship and freedom, and it’s taken me a lifetime to realize that is the beating heart of the message of Christ: laughter, freedom, life, love, friendship, risk, rescue. It’s just so different from the sanitized version of Christ that I experienced going to church as a kid.”

“The end result is that I found true peace, happiness, strength and freedom in that connection to the Almighty,” Grylls concluded.

Grylls often speaks about the powerful impact his Christian faith has had on his life.

“My Christian faith has been a really quiet, strong, empowering part of my life that’s helped me through many difficult moments,” he recently told Crosswalk. “I think if something’s part of you, you wear it on your sleeve. You don’t necessarily hide it away. I’m not intentionally hiding it or showing it. It just sort of becomes part of who you are and part of what helps you — and I think also when you’re outdoors with people, you talk about this stuff much more easily.”

He continued, “I don’t get asked about my faith necessarily on a chat show in two minutes, but you go and climb a mountain with someone and watch the sunset — you probably all experience it. You chat about stuff, the real stuff in life. It’s not just faith, but it’s all the stuff that’s connected to that — relationships and dreams and goals and attitudes and our values and all of that.”

Grylls recently encouraged UK Christians to come together for the country’s National Week of Prayer.

“Life is full of adventure. It’s also full of battles, and over the years, I’ve learnt that strength — real strength — often starts when we get down on our knees,” he said in a video about the event. “During this National Week of Prayer, speak to the One who’s been writing that story all along.”

Grylls’ faith is the cornerstone of his life, giving him strength and joy, even in his hardest moments.
