Michael W. Smith was on his way to South Africa when he missed his flight because there wasn’t room in his passport for another stamp — little did he know that God was going to use that.

“I remember walking out of the airport going, ‘I wonder what you have in mind. Why am I missing my flight?’” he recalled on PRAISE on TBN.

When he got in his Uber, his driver started asking him questions about his life. He admitted that he knew Christ when he was a child but walked away from the Lord. Smith told him his own testimony about how God changed his life.

“We get like 30 seconds from the hotel, and he stops his car and he turns around,” Smith recalled. “He says, ‘Okay, I’ve got 30 seconds left with you. Would you please tell me what an encounter with Christ means?’”

He quickly shared with the driver about God’s heart for his children. The man told Smith that he spoke with another customer, a pastor two days ago, and now Smith.

“I think God is trying to tell me something,” the man said.

Smith told him that he’d pray for him, he’d never forget him and confirmed that he believes God was calling him.

“I walked in the lobby and went, ‘That’s why I missed my flight,’” Smith said.

Smith, who’s been a Christian singer for 43 years, recently signed on as a producer for the upcoming movie DANIEL AND THE FIERY FURNACE. Before he joined the project, his son, Tyler Michael Smith, had already signed on as a composer.

The movie is directed, written and produced by The Kooman Brothers, who made DREAM and BREATH OF LIFE.

“The story of Daniel is a powerful reminder that God is faithful, even in the fire,” said Smith. “This is a story that needed to be told, and I’m grateful that the Kooman Brothers stepped up to the challenge. Their vision to tell Daniel’s story with authenticity is something that hasn’t been done on this scale, and it’s an honor to be a part.”

The movie will release on Sept. 18.

This winter, Smith will join CeCe Winans and Amy Grant on the Christmas Together tour, as he did last year. Pre-sale tickets for the tour became available in April. The first concert will be in Ohio on Nov. 27. The tour will wrap up on Dec. 23 in Nashville.

“Christmas is the most magical time of the year, and getting to tour for a second year with Amy and CeCe is something I’m incredibly grateful for,” Smith said. “There’s something really special about what we created together last year, and now we get to build on that. We can’t wait to experience it all again with audiences.”
