Three-time Grammy Award-winning artist Michael W. Smith missed a flight overseas because he didn’t have enough pages in his passport to stamp. But God used that frustration to bring one man to Him.

“I remember walking out of the airport, going, ‘Wonder what you have in mind. Why am I missing my flight?’ And I got in an Uber car with a gentleman, and he didn’t know what I was doing.'” Smith said on TBN.

The Uber driver asked Smith, “How was your flight?”

Smith responded, “I’m supposed to be on a flight to South Africa.”

Smith tried to give the driver the “short story” as to why he didn’t make his flight. After much conversation, he shared with the Uber driver what he did for work.

“He said, ‘Oh, I went to church camp. You know, I got married, and kind of walked away with the Lord,'” the “Hymn For Communion” singer recalled the driver saying. “And you know, it’s a really incredible conversation. He kind of went, ‘What’s your story then?’ And I just told him about this — that I had this massive encounter with Christ that changed my life.”

Smith has previously talked about how a near drug overdose in 1978 eventually pushed him to give his life to the Lord.

With just 30 seconds left of his ride, the Uber driver asked Smith, “Would you please tell me what an encounter with Christ means?”

“And so he slowly — he probably took 60 seconds to get to the lobby — I just told him about the Father-heart of God, you know. He said, ‘Well, I had a pastor in my car two days ago. I’ve got you in my car today. I think God is trying to tell me something.’ And I said, ‘I’m going to pray for you. I will never forget you because I think there’s a call of God in your life.’ I said, ‘Bless you,’ and I walked in the lobby, and I went, ‘That’s why I missed my flight.'”

His story is a powerful reminder that God is always at work, even in moments of frustration or confusion.

“I never could have orchestrated any of this. God is faithful,” Smith previously told The Christian Post of his life and testimony. “The greatest peace that I have is I know who I am. I’m a son of the high King of the universe. My identity crisis is solved.”

Though missing his flight seemed like a setback, Smith recognized it as a divine appointment that allowed him to have a life-changing conversation about God’s love with his Uber driver.
