When THE CHOSEN creator Dallas Jenkins and Teddy Bear Award® winner Jonathan Roumie had a creative disagreement about the portrayal of the crucifixion, it led to a change in dialogue in Season 6.
The disagreement came when Roumie read the script and saw that Jesus says something casually while he is pinned to the cross.
“At one point, he sees one of the characters… and makes kind of a light-hearted reference,” Jenkins recalled. “And so it wasn’t a theological issue, but Jonathon was extremely uncomfortable with the notion that Jesus, going through that much suffering, would…say something casual or light-hearted.”
After Jenkins got feedback from the series’ Catholic advisor, David Guffey, they changed the script, Crosswalk reported.
As the world gets ready to see Season 6, the cast and crew have been hinting at what viewers can expect.
“It’s the depiction of humanity,” explained Amy Bailey, who plays Joanna. “There is a deep, honest and true portrayal of humans going through human things.”

Roumie said performing Jesus’ death and resurrection was an incredible experience and the most difficult thing that he’s ever done.
“I spent a lot of time asking the Lord to show me what He wanted people to see and what He wanted them to experience and if it was at all possible for me to try to experience a fraction of a fraction of what He went through,” he said. “I was willing to offer myself in that way, and He gave me some really challenging experiences on set, physically and emotionally.”
The series has won multiple Teddy Bear Awards®. It’s incredible that it started out as a small crowdfunded project. And eight years later, it has over 280 million viewers worldwide.
Season 6’s synopsis reads, “The hour has come. Before the sun sets, Jesus of Nazareth will be dead. Pharisees call it justice. Romans call it peace. Followers call it murder. But in the face of loneliness and death, Jesus stands resolute in his plan that has always led to one place: the cross.”
The season’s release will coincide with an album through Capitol Christian Music Group. The first single, “All I Need Is You,” by Tyler Hubbard, has already been released.
“My wife, my three kids and I have a nightly ritual of watching THE CHOSEN. We really got into it,” Hubbard said in a statement. “It’s a show that I love and am connected to, so I was really excited to personally be a part of the show and part of the music.”
The upcoming season will premiere with the first three episodes exclusively on Prime Video on Nov. 15. A weekly episode will release through Dec. 6, and the season finale will release in theaters in spring 2027.
