Actor and podcaster Kirk Cameron has spent decades worrying about making the wrong decision, but he finds an answer in something familiar to anyone who has missed a highway exit: GPS rerouting.

“My peace comes from God’s ability to remain perfectly faithful even when I blow it,” he said in a video released Oct. 19.

Cameron opened the video with choices that can leave families stuck: taking one job over another, choosing a church or weighing an opportunity that promises better provision but requires more time away from home. He admitted that worrying over those decisions has exhausted him, too.

His driving comparison starts with paper maps and handwritten directions, when missing a landmark could leave a traveler wondering where to go next. With GPS, he explained, missing an exit brings new directions instead of a declaration that the entire vacation has failed.

Sometimes the alternate route takes longer or requires turning around. Cameron used those inconveniences to describe his belief that God can guide His children through a mistake without pretending the mistake never happened.

He pointed to Romans 8:28, which speaks of all things working together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Cameron said an unwise choice can still bring consequences, delays and difficult lessons; trusting God’s faithfulness does not erase them.

That leaves a practical question for someone facing two reasonable options: what can they actually do before choosing? Cameron described his own process rather than offering a shortcut around the work.

“My responsibility is to be faithful with what I know today and do what God has commanded me to do,” he said.

He prays, reads Scripture and seeks advice from mature Christian friends who will tell him the truth even when it hurts. He also examines his motives, asking whether the decision honors God, cares for his family and serves others.

Sometimes, he said, a decision cannot wait weeks or months. After seeking wisdom and making the best choice he knows how to make, he wants to stop spending the next six months looking backward.

“Don’t use God reroutes as an excuse for foolishness or reckless living or hasty decisions,” Cameron cautioned.

He made that distinction through the prodigal son, whose rebellion he contrasted with accidentally missing an exit. In Luke 15:17–24, the son returns home and confesses his sin, and his father runs to welcome him.

Cameron stressed that redemption does not mean God approved of the son’s reckless choices. Repentance belongs in the story, too: “God’s ability to reroute us doesn’t make our choices unimportant. It just makes his grace amazing.”

His closing challenge brought the message back to ordinary responsibilities: love your family, work hard, tell the truth, serve others and repent quickly when wrong. Those are things a person can do today without knowing how every future decision will turn out.

“Peace isn’t knowing every turn in advance. Peace is knowing who is traveling with you,” Cameron encouraged.

Cameron urged viewers to stop demanding the whole map. He followed that challenge with a smaller request: “Instead, ask Him for enough light just to take the next faithful step.”
