Movie star Ryan Gosling started to film more lighter content once he married Eva Mendes and became a dad to two daughters.
“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” Gosling said. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first.”
PR expert Sarah Schmidt said Gosling’s choice has created a healthy environment for his family to be a part of.
“It does feel as though he is gravitating toward movies that his kids could actually see and enjoy,” Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, added. “That kind of evolution is not unique as we have seen it with other actors as they get older, start families, and begin making choices that reflect where they are in life, how they see the world, and how they want to be perceived both personally and professionally.”
Before Gosling married, he took serious or dark roles. He’s starred in DRIVE, FIRST MAN, BLADE RUNNER 2049, THE NOTEBOOK and more. Since he’s started a family, his roles are more humorous and family friendly, like PROJECT HAIL MARY and STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER.
“Ryan has not only built a career of acclaimed roles, those films are often box office successes,” Ryan McCormick, co-founder of Goldman McCormick PR, told Fox News Digital. “He has attained a rare status where he can do a sandbox film like GHOST RIDER and also take a dramatic or independent role without any one performance limiting his future choices.”

His children enjoyed watching him on set when he performed in LA LA LAND.
“It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day, or we’re dancing, or we’re singing,'” Gosling said.
He proved that he could change from a serious star to an every man with ease.
“He became a dad first, actor second,” Schmidt said. “He is building a filmography legacy that his kids can be part of and proud of.”
In 2018, the actor took a four-year work break to spend time with his family.
I didn’t want to miss anything,” Gosling told Variety. “My priorities changed, and I wanted to be with my kids…I don’t know how much time I’m going to get, and I don’t want to spend it in the wrong place.”
When he worked on PROJECT HAIL MARY, he would have his children speak to him as his alien co-star through an ear peace.
“And there’s some moments in the movie where I’m laughing or I’m just so charmed by him, which is like, it’s actually my kids talking to me and helping me out,” Gosling continued. “They’ve seen many cuts of this film. They’ve given me many notes.”
He told The Daily Mail in August 2022, “I’m a dad first, and part of the reason for doing [THE GRAY MAN] was this opportunity for us to go to these interesting places and be there with my kids.”
For Gosling, success isn’t measured by the box office. It’s by which ones he can involve his family in.
