Lady A singer Charles Kelley sat beside his wife, Cassie, to share that he’s been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer.

“I feel really hopeful,” Kelley shared in the couple’s Instagram video, explaining that he wants to keep making music and spending time with his family as he undergoes treatment.

The singer said unexplained rib fractures prompted his doctor to order several blood tests. One of those tests led to the diagnosis, and Kelley credited advances in treatment with helping him feel optimistic about what comes next.

He also described the comfort of having someone to turn to. A friend facing the same disease has been sharing her experience, and Kelley said watching her navigate it has helped him.

That encouragement played a part in his decision to open up publicly. Having already shared aspects of his sobriety journey, the singer said speaking honestly about this new challenge felt freeing and took away some of its power.

He connected his approach to a lesson from recovery: taking life one day at a time and recognizing that he is not in control. Rather than laying out every step ahead, he said he would share updates when he felt it was appropriate.

For now, music remains part of the life he wants to keep living. Kelley mentioned a forthcoming Lady A record and Christmas performances, saying he hopes to continue working during the initial months of treatment.

“I can still work,” he said, adding that he expects difficult days but wants to keep doing what he loves.

Performing after learning the news had reinforced that desire, he explained. He also wants to make the most of time with his family, placing those personal moments alongside the work that brings him joy.

Kelley performs with fellow Opry members singer Hillary Scott and musician Dave Haywood in Lady A. The group has won seven Grammy Awards.

The group previously announced its This Winter’s Night Tour, with a limited December run, beginning Dec. 10 in Northfield, Ohio, and ending Dec. 21 with two shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

Those announced dates provide context for the Christmas shows Kelley mentioned, but his comments describe his hopes for working through treatment, not a guarantee about how he will feel. His update did not specify a cancer stage or provide an individualized prognosis.

According to the National Cancer Institute, multiple myeloma involves abnormal plasma cells that build up in bone marrow and can damage bones. Possible symptoms include bone pain, particularly in the back or ribs, and bones that break easily.

The institute explains that treatment choices and prognosis depend on factors including the disease’s stage, a patient’s health and response to treatment. General information about the disease cannot establish what Kelley’s individual course will look like.

His message stayed personal. He feels hopeful, values the support around him and wants to keep living fully while receiving care. With Cassie beside him, Kelley let fans into that next chapter without pretending to have every answer.
