How a Cancer Diagnosis Changed Joni Eareckson Tada’s Marriage

For Joni and Friends founder and CEO Joni Eareckson Tada, the year after her first breast cancer diagnosis brought something she could celebrate alongside the medical milestones: a deeper love for her husband, Ken Tada.

“I mean, I love this man so much more than I did a year ago,” she said in a YouTube video titled “Joni Eareckson Tada’s Cancer Journey,” reflecting on how the ordeal had changed their marriage.

In the video, she revisited her earlier cancer experience, not a new diagnosis. Her ministry reported that she received a stage III breast cancer diagnosis in 2010 and underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy.

Tada previously explained that she and Ken had video-journaled the experience because she wanted to pass along what God had taught her. That account makes room for more than the encouraging ending: it includes the fear, exhaustion and help she needed along the way.

“This program is for people who find it hard to trust God,” she said.

Tada recalled first noticing that something looked different while a friend helped brush her hair. Then came appointments, unfamiliar medical language and the unsettling stretch between discovering the lump and surgery.

“We had to sit and wait,” she recalled.

Living with quadriplegia and chronic pain had already demanded plenty from her, she explained. Cancer added a new set of questions she had not expected to face, and years of learning to depend on God did not make those questions easy.

One especially hard moment came when her oncologist outlined chemotherapy, possible side effects and another procedure. After he left the room, Tada recalled burying her head in Ken’s chest and sobbing, overwhelmed by everything ahead.

She did not describe that moment as a failure of faith. She described feeling that she lacked the resources to take on another ordeal, then gathering herself to move forward when the doctor returned.

“It’s not gonna be easy, but we’ll do it,” she recalled saying.

Ken’s care became part of that moving forward. Later, he described a conviction that God had entrusted Joni to him and called him to care for her, clarifying that he had not heard an audible voice. Joni thanked him for the care he had given her.

Her sister’s presence mattered, too. Tada remembered tearing up after surgery when she saw tears in her sister’s eyes; having family there made a frightening day less lonely.

The video closed with gratitude for a full year and what Tada described as a clear PET scan. That milestone belongs to the earlier chapter: her ministry subsequently announced another cancer diagnosis in November 2018.

Looking back on that first year, Tada found more to give thanks for than a test result. She had leaned on Christ through uncertainty, accepted help from the people around her and come to love the man beside her even more deeply through those long months of treatment and waiting.
