Should You Watch It?

The Highwaymen offers a thoughtful counterpoint to the public fascination with Bonnie and Clyde. Instead of celebrating the notorious criminals, it follows the Texas Rangers hired to stop them. The film’s moral direction is clear: the good guys win, and the criminals receive justice.

The movie earns its three-star rating through strong performances, effective suspense, superb period detail, and an excellent partnership between Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. But the R rating matters. The content guide reports 11 obscenities, three strong profanities, crime violence, smoking, and alcohol use, including a policeman’s drinking problem.

If you are a discerning adult or older teenager, The Highwaymen is worth watching for its performances and moral clarity. For children and young teens, choose something else.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

During the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow become notorious bank robbers, while much of the public views them as Robin Hood-style heroes.

When federal agents repeatedly fail to stop the criminal couple, Texas Governor Ma Ferguson hires Texas Rangers Frank Hamer and Maney Gault. Considered outdated by many, the Rangers use old-fashioned sleuthing, careful interviews, and intuition to pursue the two criminals.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means this is a good, entertaining production with notable strengths but some limitations. Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson make an excellent team, both through their chemistry and their performances. Harrelson brings sly comic relief to his role, while Costner gives the story a haunted seriousness.

The film uses a slow-burning, psychological approach. Its foot and car chases are fun, and an intense shootout is handled effectively. The period details, costumes, and settings are superbly done. It does not match the classic status of Bonnie and Clyde, but it is well produced and well acted.

The Worldview

The Highwaymen presents a strong moral worldview in which two policemen pursue and bring down two notorious bank robbers. The film’s central contrast is between public fascination with criminals and the patient work of those seeking justice. Bonnie and Clyde are regarded by many as Robin Hood-style heroes because they rob banks, but the movie places the Texas Rangers at the center of the story.

The film also presents flawed people who need to overcome their pasts. Maney Gault is a haunted alcoholic trying to regain his dignity, while Frank Hamer is haunted by violent encounters from earlier cases. Their old-fashioned methods are treated as valuable rather than obsolete, and the story ultimately affirms the importance of confronting evil.

The film’s moral vision aligns with Scripture’s recognition that governing authorities can serve justice: “for he is God’s servant for your good” (Romans 13:4).
