Should You Watch It?

Bob Roberts has enough craft to hold your interest. It moves well and features clever performances, including Tim Robbins as a pseudo-religious folk singer-turned-conservative politician seeking a U.S. Senate seat.

But the movie’s content and tone make the decision plain. It includes strong language, violence, sexual misconduct involving a 15-year-old, corruption, and ridicule of religious conservatives. The source review also describes it as a heavy-handed, mean-spirited attack on conservatives that only a few viewers will enjoy.

Even if political satire appeals to you, this is not a wise choice for a family audience. Skip it.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

A British documentary follows Bob Roberts as he campaigns for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania during the 1990 election, against the backdrop of Operation Desert Shield.

Roberts is a smiling, superficial folk singer with confidence, slogans, songs, and absurd music videos blaming the country’s problems on liberals and Great Society social programs. His opponent is longtime Pennsylvania Senator Brickley Paiste, whose campaign is damaged by a serious accusation.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means this is a competently made film with some genuine strengths, even though the overall recommendation is negative. Bob Roberts moves well, features clever performances, and holds the viewer’s interest.

Those strengths do not overcome the film’s heavy-handed approach or mean-spirited political attack. The satire has energy and craft, but its message and content make it unsuitable for most viewers.

The Worldview

Bob Roberts treats political religion and conservative rhetoric with deep suspicion. It presents prayers, promises, slogans, and moral language as tools that can help a candidate win while concealing a contradiction between his message and his actions. The film also ridicules religious conservatives and blames them for hypocrisy and deception.

Its central concern—whether public moral language matches private conduct—aligns with the biblical warning against hypocrisy. But the review describes the movie as a one-sided attack on conservatives rather than a balanced examination of corruption across political life. Viewers should distinguish the valid exposure of deception from the film’s mean-spirited treatment of a particular political and religious group.

Scripture calls people to integrity rather than empty public performance: “You will recognize them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16).
