THE MAN INSIDE
A serious exposé weakened by confusion, propaganda, and mature content.
Should You Watch It?
THE MAN INSIDE has a worthwhile subject. It follows a crusading journalist who risks his career to expose a newspaper’s manipulation of the news, government influence, and exploitation of an innocent student. The story’s concern for truth and its opposition to bigotry and racism give it a serious moral purpose.
But the film is not an easy recommendation. Its opening half-hour is confused by frequent location changes, disappearing secondary characters, and newspaper headlines that muddy the story. The source review also finds its politics biased and left-wing, making the film difficult to digest as a fair examination of its subject.
The adult content further narrows its audience, especially the protagonist’s ongoing adultery. Watch it at home only if you are a discerning adult prepared to weigh both its moral concerns and its ideological slant.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESGunter Wallraf, a German criminal-investigative journalist, disguises himself as Franz Messlar and goes undercover inside The Standard, a widely read German newspaper run by an unscrupulous publishing tycoon with suspicious government ties.
He hopes to expose a government-sponsored smear campaign against liberal political forces. Inside the newsroom, he discovers how stories can be arranged and manufactured rather than honestly reported. His investigation soon places him in danger.
Is It Any Good?
Two stars means this film has a serious purpose but does not consistently deliver a compelling movie. The investigation into manufactured news and political manipulation gives the drama weight, and the courtroom goal of clarifying how society works provides a meaningful center.
The execution is less successful. The many changes of location, secondary characters who appear and vanish, and repeated headlines confuse the story line, particularly during the first 30 minutes. Thrill-seeking audiences may also find the crusade insufficiently flashy.
The Worldview
The film exalts investigative journalism, opposition to bigotry and racism, and the search for truth behind powerful institutions. Gunter challenges a newspaper that manufactures news and presents its publisher’s worldview as truth. The story argues that society is not always what it appears to be and that media power can serve political manipulation.
Its political outlook is presented as biased left-wing propaganda, particularly in its treatment of the West German media bureaucracy and government influence. The film’s criticism of media dishonesty is a legitimate concern, but its own perspective is not presented as politically neutral. Its moral challenge is also weakened by Gunter’s adultery, since his stated devotion to justice does not extend consistently into his private life.
The film’s central concern is truthful witness. Scripture likewise commands, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16).

THE MAN INSIDE cares about truth and media accountability, but its confused storytelling, political bias, and adult content make it a poor family choice.
