Should You Watch It?

This Disney comedy has a genuinely worthwhile center. The struggle between an eleven-year-old boy and his stepfather-to-be is handled with humor and insight, while the story portrays positive values in the difficult process of forming a new family.

But the movie undercuts those strengths. The engaged couple moves in together, and the film includes implied sexual immorality. A gangster revenge subplot nearly sinks the whole movie with inept dialogue, cartoonish violence, and cheap laughs.

Because the movie has real family merit but also content many parents may not want to endorse, watch it at home rather than making it a family theater outing.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Sandy and her eleven-year-old son, Ben, have lived happily together for five years since Ben’s father left them. Their peaceful life changes when Sandy falls in love with Jack, a U.S. attorney, and invites him to move in.

Ben is dismayed and tries to manipulate the situation to drive Jack away. Jack, an all-around nice guy, is determined to earn Ben’s trust and affection.

Is It Any Good?

Two stars means the film has a solid premise and some strong character work, but its weaknesses are hard to overlook.

The scenario is set up well, and the writers logically explore the problems created when a step-parent enters a family. The central struggle has humor and insight. Unfortunately, the gangster revenge subplot brings inept dialogue, cartoonish violence, and cheap laughs that nearly sink the movie.

The Worldview

The film values family relationships, perseverance, and the effort required when a new parental figure enters a child’s life. Jack keeps trying to win Ben’s trust, while Ben struggles with the disruption of the home he has shared with his mother for years. Those elements give the comedy a positive moral center.

That center is tarnished by the engaged couple’s cohabitation and the implication of sexual immorality. The movie presents this lifestyle choice within a family story rather than treating marriage as the proper boundary for sexual intimacy. Its family insight is therefore mixed with a serious departure from biblical sexual ethics.

The film’s longing for a stable, loving home connects with Scripture’s call to honor marriage: “Let marriage be held in honor among all” (Hebrews 13:4).
