A BEAUTIFUL MIND
A brilliant, sobering journey toward healing and humility.
Should You Watch It?
A BEAUTIFUL MIND is an extraordinary drama about genius, arrogance, mental illness, healing, and love. Ron Howard directs with heart, while Russell Crowe gives a remarkably broad performance as John Nash moves from young scholar to older man. The film is masterfully presented and offers a sobering look into the mind of someone struggling with delusions.
The movie also gives its emotional center to Alicia Nash’s sacrificial commitment to her husband. John’s journey from abrasiveness and haughtiness toward gentleness and humility gives the story a redemptive shape, while its portrayal of mental illness can be disturbing and nerve-wracking. A few sexual references, mild language, violence, alcohol use, and smoking keep it from being suitable for everyone.
If you are an older teenager or adult who can handle the film’s difficult themes, WORTH THE TRIP — OLDER TEENS AND ADULTS.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESJohn Nash is a brilliant but socially abrasive Carnegie Scholarship student at Princeton University in 1947. He wants to discover a mathematical breakthrough that will make his life count for something.
After developing a theory that challenges conventional wisdom, John earns professional recognition and is eventually asked to decode Russian communications for the government. Along the way, he meets Alicia, a graduate student who becomes his wife. But John’s extraordinary mind also leads him into a frightening struggle with mental illness.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is a masterfully presented, compelling film. Ron Howard’s direction is heart-gripping, and Russell Crowe handles the demanding role of a man aging from college student to old man with impressive range.
The film cleverly portrays the mindset of someone living with mental illness, and its emotional payoff is strong. The middle becomes somewhat tedious and nerve-wracking, but the ending delivers a fine payoff. Based on the true story of John Nash, the movie is both sobering and deeply moving.
The Worldview
A BEAUTIFUL MIND presents a solid moral worldview with redemptive elements. John’s arrogance, independence, and elitist confidence gradually give way to gentleness, humility, and honesty. His desire to make his life count points toward a purpose beyond academic achievement, even though the film frames that purpose in humanist terms rather than explicitly grounding it in God.
The film’s most powerful moral vision appears in Alicia’s self-sacrificial commitment to her mentally ill husband. Her perseverance through “thick and thin” reflects the seriousness of marital vows and presents love as something stronger than comfort or convenience. The film also treats truth as essential to healing: John begins to recover when he refuses to keep feeding the delusions that have controlled him.
Christians may view the film’s “voices” and delusions through the question of spiritual as well as mental struggle. The story does not clearly resolve that question, but it does show the destructive power of false thoughts and the life-giving power of rejecting them. Scripture says, “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130).
