THE DA VINCI CODE DECEPTION

In approximately one year, Columbia Pictures will expose audiences to a movie version of THE DA VINCI CODE, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks. The phenomenal success of Dan Brown’s novel THE DA VINCI CODE has no doubt spurred its 10 million plus readers to wrestle with the claims Brown puts forth in this novel. Brown begins his tome with these words, “FACT: All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in the novel are accurate.” Problems quickly arise however, when Brown asserts that, among other deceptions, Jesus married Mary Magdalene, and their union resulted in children becoming France’s royal bloodline. Brown also casts doubt on the reliability of the New Testament canon and exaggerates the role of the “lost books of the Bible.” Finally, the novel also asserts that the Church invented the divinity of Jesus in order to keep a male dominated society, and the Roman Catholic Church allegedly has covered up these so-called truths for the last 2000 years.

Production values excel all around as the highest scholars in their fields speak eruditely about history, the Catholic Church, The Bible, and Da Vinci himself. The strength of the content is also its weakness. With a running time of approximately 120 minutes, the blabber heavy documentary merely becomes a series of talking heads expounding, clarifying and teaching. A few very brief historical reenactments are thrown in but their presence merely seasons the otherwise long-winded expose.
