Should You Watch It?

PIPPI LONGSTOCKING is a colorful, amusing animated musical with a delightful score, imaginative story, and high-quality cartooning. Younger children may enjoy Pippi’s superhuman strength, comical peculiarities, pet horse, pet monkey, and cheerful adventures with the children next door.

The cost is its view of authority. Pippi repeatedly outsmarts or rejects adults who try to correct her, while the story treats undisciplined freedom as the ideal. Her father’s decision to leave his nine-year-old daughter to fend for herself while he sails away again may also trouble parents.

This is a fun afternoon diversion, but because it is available for home viewing, WAIT FOR HOME lets you enjoy its imagination while helping your children think clearly about obedience and responsibility.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Nine-year-old Pippi Longstocking returns to her Swedish home after losing her ship’s captain father at sea in a gale. She settles into Villa Villekulla with her pet horse and monkey, ready to play all day and all night.

Next door, Tommy and Anika become her friends. Together, they eat pancakes, play games, encounter suspicious adults, and discover that Pippi’s unusual confidence and strength can turn ordinary situations into extraordinary adventures.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means this is a good, enjoyable children’s film with some clear weaknesses. The cartooning is high quality, the musical score is delightful, and the imaginative story makes Pippi an amusing presence for younger viewers.

The film’s central idea is less successful. Its comedy repeatedly comes from Pippi defeating attempts at moral correction, and its celebration of carefree childhood may dismay parents. It is entertaining, but its message about authority limits how fully families can embrace it.

The Worldview

PIPPI LONGSTOCKING exalts imagination, independence, playful energy, and a child’s ability to find fun in every circumstance. Pippi is an irrepressible orphan tomboy who lives by herself, improvises her own rules, and cheerfully resists adults who want to direct or correct her.

The film removes or distorts the biblical importance of parental authority. Adults are often portrayed as inept, disapproving, or intent on repressing Pippi’s personality, while Pippi’s refusal of correction is treated as freedom. Her father’s return at a crucial moment does not resolve the concern, since he leaves his nine-year-old daughter to fend for herself while departing on another seagoing voyage.

The story does acknowledge that lying is bad, but its larger vision celebrates carefree childhood as an end in itself. Scripture gives children a different calling: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right” (Ephesians 6:1).
